Weird question I suppose as nobody can see into the future, but I was wondering if someone might be a bit more plastic savvy than I am and speculate just how careful we have to be with our 25th figures? It's a totally different type of plastic, but will that make a difference?
The biggest worry about my 'classic' colection is light damage. I have them all locked in an art bin, yet the likes of Storm Shadow and Spirit seem to be changing colour regardless - The (pretty bad) damage is already done. The one figure I have MOC from the 25th range is wave 4 Storm Shadow, currently hanging on my wall. For around three hours a day it catches the sun and I'm thinking of tucking it away somewhere to protect it. Seems a shame though, so I'd really like to know how careful we have to be.

Storm Shadow has already been moved, tucked down where the sun never shines (if you pardon the expression). Thanks for the tip!
All of my 25th figures are in metal tins completely cut off from light sources, but that sort of defeats the object in collecting them! It's sad to hear that the damage in inevitable. When I opened my light proof storage box and saw the likes of ARAH Stormy, Spirit and Zap changing colour so profoundly I almost wept! You do your best to keep these things 'nice', but then nature has other ideas and mucks things up for you.

Me too, I got a lil scared and I put him away. Don't want him all yellow and stuff.

Will the modern plastic make a difference? I would think not, not in any substantive way at any rate.
When I was in University I bought a few toys here and there (hey, I was a poor student, could only afford a few!). I remember when the SW LEGO came out, my friend and I just had to buy a little set. I bought the Landspeeder with Luke and Obi-Wan. At some point during school I also bought a Boba Fett action figure. I made the mistake of sitting them on a window sill, since I didn't have much in the way of shelves except milk crates (ah, those were the days!). Before long, Luke's white torso started turning yellow. I didn't notice until years later, but Boba Fett's colouring had turned sort of yellowish green as well. Mind you, this was around ten years ago, but I don't think toy plastics have changed much since then. The LEGO was made of a harder ABS plastic more like classic RAH Joes, but that Boba Fett was the more rubbery kind like what you see with modern figures, so I'd be careful. I don't keep my vintage or modern figures in a box or anything like that. They're out there on the shelf, but I'm always careful that my collection is out of direct sunlight, and I keep a shade down on the window there at all times (unless I'm taking a picture or something). I'm extra careful where I place white toys like SS, my Snowcat, SNAKE Armor and Cobra Wolf, to name but a few. They're a little more hidden. I've had these out for a few years now and haven't had any problems with yellowing. Last edited by DPrime; 05-15-2008 at 12:48 PM.. |

I posed this question few months back. My wave 4 loose Storm Shadow seems to be browning in the face a bit...the side that a lamp is shining on about 3 feet away with a natural white light bulb. And i have seen Stormy's with browning in the face/mask MOC at retail, so the plastic is unpredictable.
I keep all mine (carded) stored away from any light source and moisture. These won't be worth spit someday, i know this, but i like to keep them mint for myself. |

You do your best to keep these things 'nice', but then nature has other ideas and mucks things up for you. To be honest I think it's the best place for them. Personally I'm hesitant to put them in anything but bags specifically made for action figures (assuming they've got the same kind of protective qualities comic-book bags have). I wouldn't put them in regular ziplocks, or in a big container all together. Or tin. I have no idea what mixing those elements together over time will do. Someone had mentioned a few years ago (on TNI I think) that having figures in the same bag can potentially be harmful even. So far I've been fine letting my figures "breathe" in the open as long as they're out of direct sunlight (or any kind of light, really). BTW, didn't know Zap was one of those figures prone to discolouration, good to know... (although they all can be if you sit them out in direct sunlight, of course) |

In the case of ZAP it's mostly his arms, moreso than the other 'original 13' it seems. Mine looks like he's made of four different coloured plastics!

What kinda bites for me...is our new house.
My office is on the 3rd floor...which is basically the attic turned in to 2 offices & a walk in closet. Once Summer hits, it's going to bake up there. hot cards = warm glue Warm Glue = looose bubbles RABBLE! So much for my MOSC collection! |

C.I.A.D., seeing as you rich and all, transform that walk-in closet into a humidor/panic room. Problem solved. You are welcome buddy.
