So the new Mission Brazil II set is selling/sold out, and it's about 3 weeks before the Convention even starts. And that's got me thinking about these figures and their place in the "official" world of G.I. Joe...
I always liked the sub-teams, and Claymore is one of my all-time favorites... So it was like the Club read my mind and made this set. Plus, the Leatherneck and the Wet-Suit just look awesome. I do, however, find the prices hard to swallow. I understand all that about production costs for so few figures, etc. But here's an idea: Make more figures. Obviously people want these things. Why not give more fans an opportunity to buy them? YoJoe.com posts these figures and their filecards like they're official Hasbro products, and part of the continuity... if that's the case, more fans should have an opportunity to own them. But here's a question: Are these really "official figures"? They're only available for crazy ammounts of money, at a one-time convention. 3 days and they're gone... is that official? Now don't get me wrong, I'm really pumped about Claymore and all the rest... but is he any more "official" than a really good custom that gets shown all over the forums and only one guy owns? Is that really different? Or what about the complete custom figures kits available from Broken Arrow Toys? Those are limited quantity, expensive editions of characters that Hasbro hasn't given us... but they are available to a select few collectors who are willing to pay up. Are they less "official" than the Club's offerings? There may be a few less available, but they are available for far longer than the Club offerings. And with Slayer Design studios, and RagingSpoon doing similarly excellent work, who's to say what is really "official"? I mean, if you really want a 25th version of Muskrat, don't you really want to buy Alyosha's verison? Isn't that the closest thing we have to an "official" version? My point is this - sorry to rant - but other than having a little "stamp of approval", does the Club have any real claim to making toys that are officially part of the line, or just mass producing expensive customs? What do y'all think?

They are official because they are official licensed product from Hasbro. that is completely different than an independent company or individual customizer making a toy on their own without Hasbro's participation, even if it is just as an approval.

Right. I understand that the Club has to official Hasbro "Stamp of Approval".
I suppose what I'm getting at is this: The Club makes a few hundred special edition figures (sometimes an obscure character that a LOT of hardcore fans really want - Claymore is a perfect example). Those special figures are only sold at a 3-day convention, one time. After that, good luck with ebay. Now, the whole reason we're all fans here is because we grew up with Joe, and we grew up with him because he was available Nationwide... but these Club figures aren't. Is that really the spirit of the Toy we all grew up with? Alyosha's complete custom figure kits (and Slayer's upcoming kits), and Ragingspoon's kits are available. The kits have a similarly expensive pricetag, but they are widely available. If someone references the Recondo kit over at Broken Arrow Toys, we all know what he's talking about (or can find out PDQ). So if the Con figures are aimed at us - the old fanboys who grew up with this stuff - aren't we really, in some grassroots way, the arbiters of what is "official"? For me, if I want the "Official" version of 25th Claymore, I'll buy the Con fig... but Aly's figs are no less "official" in my mind, if I want Muskrat or Repeater. Just my opinion. Thoughts?

If you're calling them expensive customs, and you mention alyosha (who does do amazing work), try getting a fully painted custom from him for $20. Not gonna happen for anything less than three times that. |

It's all about the big H. We're just lucky that the customizers that make characters and sell them don't have the hammer brought down on them by Hasbro's lawyers. Ditto for Alyosha and SDS.

Last time I checked, Alyosha wasn't given access to any of Hasbro's GI Joe figure molds, and were not supported by Hasbro at all like the club is.
I know you're disappointed that you missed out the sets, but there will always be eBay and the Tank. I know without them I'd never have the opportunity to own these. Claiming that they can't be official because they're too hard to get sounds like the worst kind of sour grapes.

Other than the stamp of approval, the fact that they pay Hasbro directly to own the sole license to produce convention pieces in the US, and that the figures are made in the same factories in China, then yeah they're just customs. So those figures you see in the stores are just customs too then.
If you're calling them expensive customs, and you mention alyosha (who does do amazing work), try getting a fully painted custom from him for $20. Not gonna happen for anything less than three times that. And let's be honest, it's only $20 per figure for those who are at the Con or Pre-Ordered. Everyone else will get on ebay and try to get a few of these toys. The average price per buyer will be far closer to Aly's prices in the end.

Yeah, when you bring up the point that they're only sold over a three day weekend (and online for pre-order months in advance) as a reason why their being official should be in doubt, what then would you call Masters of the Universe Classics figures that sell out in a half an hour?
