I think you all worry too much about some toys. Buy what you like, official or not.

Really? Man, we were keeping this thread pretty clean. Why did you stop by? I just never understand posts like this. There's a whole forum full of threads out there - if one thread angers you, just avoid it. I honestly don't understand it when a thread angers someone; it's not like anyone is making them read it.

I think I see where official and legal are being meshed here. Can I make an analogy?
In the same way, Hasbro decides what is and is not G.I.Joe. And they recognize these figures by them being legally licensed. This is why there is a big hang up when the legal part is trying to be subtracted from the topic. The legality/license is an integral part of knowing what Hasbro has decided is official. In the question initially presented, "official" does have legal meaning. I get that your words didn't quite match what you were trying to say. It happens. But I have to say that with official in a lot of the posts, I am still not entirely getting what it is that you were looking to discuss. Well, that makes for a somewhat different topic, though one more open to discussion. My answer: Yes, I do see them as different than a one-off. They make a nice conversation piece. When placed among your Joes, they can serve as placeholders, sentimental reminders of what the community can do, cathartic manifestations of what you would like to see Hasbro release, or maybe something else. But those are ways that they are the same as a single custom. They are different because they may be a common ground between more than one collector. It may be in multiple displays right now. But if we are talking more official or more grassroots, I say no to both. They are all customs to me. I do get pretty excited when I see great ones. I actually hope that Hasbro takes note. And when some customs are repeated over and over again, this should be a sign to Hasbro that this is something we would like to see made. How many times since the advent of the internet have we seen a custom Pythona? They have actually been out there longer than that. There were plenty of Big Lob customs as well. It is an indication that many of us would like these things from the official source. I'm always hoping that Hasbro looks at the customs online and uses them as a barometer of what we would like and what their current parts library is capable of producing. Quote:
They're official alright.
I know what the OP is talking about, but "official" isn't the correct word to use. I would say there's a "hierarchy" of what's essential or not, and I think that for pretty much all of us, retail Hasbro releases come first. Anything else is up to the individual fan/collector to decide. For me it's roughly: 1. Official retail release (North America) a) from '82-'86 (the cartoon years) b) from '87 (the cartoon movie years) c) from '88-'90 (when the line was still fairly good/military) d) TRU '97-on 2. Foreign retail release (mainly talking about vintage here) 3. GIJCC official convention exclusives 4. etc... It's not really that thought out after that. I mean, you just decide what you like or what you think is "appropriate". Some people consider the Canadian con exclusives just as much of a must have as the GIJCC ones - but to me, even though they've got the official blessing from Hasbro now, they're still customs made from store-bought items...

I'm such an incureable collector that just knowing there is something out there in the Modern World that I don't have, makes me want it for my collection...Badly...Examples: Roddy Piper, Backstop (Canada Exclusive), or anything Ross has received in the last 6 months!!!

New rule - if it was carried by Ross, it wasn't official.
