It seems to me that most people on this site are geared up only for re-releases of Joes of a bygone era. The anniversary was fun, despite a lot of key figures being left out for numerous repaints, and a few questionable choices. But how many of you would be receptive to the Modern Era being a platform for new vehicles and characters?
A lot of the original Joe/Cobra vehicles (and even personnel) are outdated, or pretty useless in a modern day context. Let's remember - there are kids who don't know what it was like when Joes were originally released in 3-3/4" form (like we felt when our older cousins or uncles scoffed at a shrunken-down Joe), and it would give them a better claim if at least the new line wasn't just rehashed ideas. And let's face it - towards the end of the first run of the ARAH line, things had gotten pretty corny. That's what happens when something tried and true tries to keep up with what's trendy and marketable. When Joes were put back in their original (3-3/4") context, consumer interest went back up. I'm sure this was mostly due to us older fans and collectors, but anyway... I feel the new figures coming out (once the new ARAH line has been established enough to continue far into the future - which I'm sure we all already feel that it is) should start to evolve again. But without getting ridiculous. Maybe with the movie coming out we'll see a line of equally sized figures and vehicles that put everything in a new context - but I won't get into my feelings about the movie here. So, who wants a Sky Striker? Or who would rather have a new F-35B Lightning II (with VTOL capabilites)? Who would rather have an APC, with nothing more to protect your Joes than a canvas cover? Or who would rather have a LAV or a AAV7 (both amphibious as the APC, but thoroughly armored and gunned)? The prospect of newer, more realistic vehicles is far more appealing to me than seeing the same vehicles I had as a kid. Anyone else feel the same? |

there are 100's of existing great characters to pull from that have not been updated with even new uni's or equipmenet, i don't think i would want ANY new characters. as far as vehicles again there is alot that can be done to UPDATE or MODERNIZE the existing pool of several 100 vehicles. that does not mean an occasional new vehicle or character is bad just think we already have tons of great ones

Keep this line based off the vintage stuff, the movie line will provide modern vehicles and characters.

I think if Hasbro is going to keep the kids into G.I. Joe they need to either incorperate some modern vehicles and weapons. Maybe they can keep the 25th line going and start a modern line with the same characters to pull new Joe fans in. As for the movie line goes, it could be used to start a modern line however it will be more futuristic than modern.

and we don't need futuristic because we all know how many of us truly love battle force 2000 and Echo Warriors!

I'd like to see a few more vintage vehicles like the Skyhawk and the Conquest. But I see the point that a lot of stuff is cheesy and outdated. Most of the Cobra stuff is pretty lame after 1986.
I'd love to see a new jets or some armored vehicles too but in the classic style with classic colors. Some figures are outdated too. But some are just cool. Like Outback and Dusty...classic figures that we need to be redone. Other like Crystal Ball and Raptor are far fetched and not really part of the resurgence I want. But I would like more villains and thugs. More terrorists and rogues that have WMD on their mind. That would help fill out the line. I wouldn't even mind a whole subgroup of stealth figures and vehicles. That would fit into modern era military tactics. |

Possibly... if it were done correctly. I know that I personally that I would stop getting the line if many of the post '87-88 era start getting made, I'll probably stop getting the line. Too brightly colored and trying to be too futuristic. I have Star Wars to get my sci fi fix.
By done correctly, I mean... how about a sort of approach like the Star Wars evolutions. (for those not familliar, it is a set of 3 figures that are either the same person in their various costumes like Anakin Padawan, Anakin Jedi and finally Darth Vader) I don't know that they could pull off the 3 pack, but probably a 2 pack. Say Airborne... Have the original style but then have a modern take on him. Something to that effect. |
