These figures are what happens when a company starts ignoring the actual brand elements of the individual brands when designing the lines and attempt to make uniformed toylines across all of their brands. Or perhaps it is a strategy that retailers have expressed to Hasbro that they want. Either way, it is a terrible idea.
Hasbro created this type of figure for all of their toylines, not just G.I. Joe, so that was what they were thinking -- make all of their toylines available across multiple and identical product tiers. Quote:
Is there ANYONE here on the tank that actually bought one of those 12" figs??? I know I didn't.
Now if you want a cool larger fig from SW, for about $30 you can get a highly articulated Stormtrooper, Darth Vader, X-wing Luke or Han Solo from the Disney Store that has lights and sound. I bought the Stormtrooper, and it's pretty awesome. If Hasbro had done something like that for Joe, well, IDK. It probably wouldn't have the same impact that a SW character has. The purpose of this tier of product is to give kids a very basic toy to play with. Problem is G.I. Joe doesn't have that kid market and the movie didn't create one. |

Hasbro created this type of figure for all of their toylines, not just G.I. You weren't supposed to buy these figures anymore than Hasbro would have expected you to buy a toy in their pre-school line up. That isn't what this product tier was designed for. The purpose of this tier of product is to give kids a very basic toy to play with. Problem is G.I. Joe doesn't have that kid market and the movie didn't create one. Dude, because it says GI Joe!!! LOL! I get your point though. They obviously weren't geared towards adult collectors. I was just curious if any adult collectors DID buy these. It'd also be interesting to know what the sales numbers are for these things.

Hasbro 4" figures aren't geared to adults either. Sideshow and Hot Toys figures are. Collectors buy things that aren't "geared" towards them. But not stuff that looks like crap. |

Just because Hasbro sells those products at mass retail, and ensures they meet all of the child safety regulations with the hopes that children will catch on the line as well, doesn't change the fact that they are developed with adult collectors as the market. Sideshow and Hot Toys create high-end toys that children and parents certainly aren't going to pay for, and then label them adult collectible to avoid having to meet the safety requirements of toys aimed at children. But that doesn't mean that the 4" line is not geared towards adult simply because Hasbro doesn't want to completely eliminate the child consumer as well and develops them to meet all child safety standards which increases the potential market size. Just because those companies solely target adult collectors with their products doesn't mean Hasbro isn't developing their products with adult collectors in mind, nevertheless as the target market. The 25th line certainly was targeting adults as the target market, and all subsequent lines have been built off of that. Last edited by backhawkdown; 06-13-2014 at 01:03 PM.. |
