Okay... So one of my arguments with why many of the new G.I. Joe lines seem so stale is that there's a serious lack of new characters and vehicles. In many cases, new characters have been developed but given old names and reworked as classic characters. In my opinion, this is just lazy and uninspired. To me these characters and vehicles come off as being cheap knock-offs of the originals.
The counter argument for this has been two-fold. First, there's the issue of trademarking. Trademarks cost money to maintain. If Hasbro is paying for a trademark, then they should use said trademarks. The second is that collectors and toy buyers prefer getting reworked versions of the old figures and will consistently buy them based on prior merit. I disagree with both arguments. Hasbro should let some of the old trademarks die. Only true fans and collectors care who Blowtorch or Tripwire and the likes are. Other figures like Deep Six or Alpine or even Beachhead had a good run, but aren't necessary for an annual update. So let those trademarks go to make room for new characters. Those that remain to redone (over and over again at nausea inducing levels) should surely stay but if they are redone. Make them better than the last. I'd rather have a brand new team member than 10 different versions of the same figure. The second argument is rather subjective and is the purpose of this poll. I think that getting a steady set of new characters and vehicles is part of what keeps G.I. Joe thriving. It's the ability to engage the collector or child's imagination and provide more outlets for their Joe Universe. In this, I think that if Hasbro put out a wider range of figures and vehicles, it would encourage others to pick them up. So my question is this... Should G.I. Joe move forward by providing along with new figures, new characters and vehicles? Your options: Yes - You're in favor of bringing in new characters/vehicles and would buy them. No - You like the reworked old characters/vehicles and have no desire for newer ones. Updates are fine - Updates of old characters/vehicles should be for mail-ins or online limited lines while introducing new characters/vehicles.

Bring on the new figures/characters. For what they paid just in new versions of Snake-Eyes we could have had a commando squad! I say use the old characters to launch the new GI Joe show & introduce / move onto the new Joes.

I think everybody knows how I feel on the subject. I can't stand POC because I'm sick of those characters. Hasbro can shove Snake Eyes & Storm Shadow. I'm done with them. I won't buy another Snake Eyes or Storm Shadow figure unless the design is so radically different that it doesn't look anything like them.

Not much room on the poll.... So review the options below.

Updates are fine - Updates of old characters/vehicles should be for mail-ins or online limited lines while introducing new characters/vehicles.

Actually, I want 50% new characters & 50% updated old characters. But by updated old characters I mean characters they haven't updated yet like Sci-Fi, Hydro-Viper, Techno-Viper, B.A.T. ver2 etc.
I do not want any more of Snake-Eyes, Storm Shadow, Cobra Commander, Destro or Duke. |

I'd like to see a new era altogether. The characters we know and love, when they were developed, came out of the Viet Nam era, at least in the comics. These guys are old now! It's time to bring about a new, mysterious masked man, and a new bold, dashing leader. And new hot chicks. And the tough Marine and Ranger. And the enemy can change too. Cobra Commander will eventually die or quit, so someone else has to take over. They wouldn't necessarily have to go back to square one, but I think it would be neat to see a new generation.
The down side to that, though, is that we all identify with some of these main characters. Even people who don't follow GI Joe know who Snake Eyes is, so on the other hand it could potentially hurt the brand to start from scratch like that.

I do not want any more of Snake-Eyes, Storm Shadow, Cobra Commander, Destro or Duke. Look at the formative years of G.I. Joe when it was in it's prime (1983-1989). Only a select few previous versions got a remake. Some were even placed in the special order category (mail-in/fan club/convention only). You mentioned Sci-Fi... He was a new character that replaced former laser trooper, Grand Slam. As a collector since the OG13, I had both Sci-Fi and Grand Slam. Two Laser Troops are better than one! Another good example is the Cobra Vipers. Originally designed to take the place of the blue shirt troopers, they were not only very welcomed but made an auxiliary to the blue shirts.

See, here's the thing. What's old to us may not be old to this generation. Maybe you think Tripwire should be left behind, but if it pleases classic collectors who want an update, and kids to whom he's a completely new character in the included comic, then why not satisfy both?
New characters are always welcome, just look at Helix, Night Adder, Bench Press, and now Shadow Tracker. There's always been a steady trickle of new with the old, that's how Hasbro's always done it, and it's always worked. BTW, if Hasbro now owns the rights to the old Marvel comics, don't they need to maintain the rights to all those old characters anyway to keep them in print? |

You missed an argument: Retailers are driven by the "core character mentality" as surely as Hasbro is. They all but mandate it on every boys action figure line in existence, regardless of which company they come from (Not even DCUC with its' deep and varied character selection is immune...note the refresh "all star" cases and repacks mixed in various case assortments...no coincidence that these were introduced to the line right when Wal-Mart started carrying it). Trying to alter the business model in the way you describe may well lead to Hasbro having no mass retail outlet to sell these figures at. Once you strip away all the easily recognizable characters/names, you're left with a line that many people will not recognize as G.I. Joe any more than they'd recognize Star Wars without Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, etc...and that includes the buyers for the retail outlets. In short, you fail to account for the manner in which the toy market has fundamentally changed since the days of the original ARAH (and Trademark laws have changed a lot, too).
Also, your poll is unfairly skewed, since you offer no option for a mix of old and new with both options being within the main line (as your "mix old and new" option limits "remakes" to "limited lines and mail-aways)." I'm sure many collectors would be quite happy with a 50/50 or even 75/25 mix. After all, not every new character is going to be a hit. Last edited by Jmacq1; 07-15-2010 at 03:16 PM.. |
