Yeah the original 83's (82's?) had no arm cut. I had the same question a while back and I learned about it on yojoe.com or wiki i think.

Shogi, this is a great topic, I was wondering about this also. I personally like how you can tell the first release apart from the new ones.

You guys not knowing the difference between straight-arm and swivel-arm figures is making me suddenly feel very very old...
The original '82 figures not only didn't have the swivel cut, but they also had bulkier waists (precursor to the diaper crotch?) and seemed to be made of a slightly weaker plastic. The only figures I ever had broken thumbs and crotches on were the '82 straight arms. The 82/83 swivel-arm v1.5's were much better figures. |

i like to display the wide, think they look better. for customs, prob'ly go thin. may be easier to deal with, and likely more readily available.
mind you, this is from a guy that does not do customs. and also from a guy that fought reeeeally hard not to include "wide crotch vs. thin crotch" preference jokes into this reply. i amaze myself with my self restraint. *pats back* I agree with camper use the thin for customs |

When it came to these 25th figures I wanted them to resemble their original ARAH counterparts as closely as possible, but with an updated look and feel to them. If they never changed the crotch piece from the "diaper" crotch to the "fixed" one I wouldn't have cared less. Once they made the change though all that I've wanted to purchase since then are the fixed versions. I even decided to put off buying new figures, or opening the ones that I already had until those fixed crotched figures were released. I then returned the "diaper" crotched figures I no longer wanted.
I am a bit upset that they didn't do that crotch fix to every figure in the line though. After awhile I broke down and opened my Cobra Officer and Trooper, along with some other figures like Cobra Commander and Duke that they haven't fixed yet. If they do decide to update those figures with a crotch fix I will be upset and tempted to buy them to replace the ones I have already opened. Then I will have to sell off the "diaper" crotched figures that I would no longer have a need for. I also hated the 1982 "straight armed" figures, so I'm happy that they made that change. Now that I'm older and I try to replace figures from my original "played with" collection with figures that are in much better condition, I stay away from those 1982 figures and try to find the ones that were updated with the "swivel" arms in 1983. |
