I recently typed out this letter and sent it to Hasbro. It is in reguards to the price increase on the GI JOE 25th anniversary figures. I know some other people were thinking of writing to Hasbro, so I thought I would share what I wrote. I know wal-mart is actually the retailer who raised prices, but I thought I would go to the direct source of the manufacture to find out about pricing. I was trying to be as professional as possible with being rude, but at the same time adressing the concern of how high can they keep bumping the price up just because the lines popularity, anyways here goes:
To whom it may concern at Hasbro, My name is Matthew Blackert and I have been a big fan of G.I. Joe while growing up. Many childhood memories were made by watching the 1980’s GI JOE cartoon series, collecting GI JOE comics, and collecting every single GI JOE action figure I could get my parents to buy me for Christmas, Birthdays, and special occasions. With that being said, when I found out about the 25th Anniversary line I was immediately interested. The updated figures with similar card art to the 80’s brought back so many memories. I have collected nearly every figure from wave 1- wave 7(which I was hoping to get upon release). I like the directions Hasbro is going with the line, and how more figures and vehicles are going to be released in the near future. And the best part about the line was how affordable the figures were, and this is coming from a full time college student who also works part time to pay his way. However, my concern I would like you to address is the recent price skyrocketing of the 25th Anniversary single figures. I have purchased every figure thus far for $4.88 at my local Wal-mart retail stores. Within the past two months the price jumped up from $4.88 to $5.44. And finally this week the price inflated to $6.84. Is there not an end to how much one will charge for a single 3 ¾’ inch figure? I don’t understand how in a two month time frame a single figure can jump nearly two dollars in price? I understand the popularity of the line, but at the same time It is the fans of GI Joe that have been passionately collecting the series which in turn has made the series popular. As soon as my local stores stock the 25th anniversary GI Joe, they seem to sell right off the shelves, unlike many other brands of action figures that hang on store pegs for weeks and months. I can understand a subtle price increase over an extended period of time, but this recent skyrocket makes me feel like I am being taken advantage of as a loyal patron of GI Joe and Hasbro. I know I am only one voice and my opinion means nothing to a large company such as yourself, but I couldn’t let the opportunity to relay my feelings slip past me. I will not take my snake eyes poster off my wall, nor will I cash in my childhood GI Joes collection because I am upset. I won’t even part with my 25th Anniversary collection, but I will wonder what Hasbro is thinking the next time I have to look at a price tag on a 25th anniversary figure and decide whether I should purchase it or not. Thanks for hearing out a concerned GI Joe fanatic. Sincerely, Matt Blackert HASBRO'S RESPONSE: Hi Matthew, Thank you for contacting Hasbro, Inc. We are pleased to have the chance to respond. Please be advised we have not increased the pricing for our 25th Anniversary figures. When these figures are sold to the retailers we provide them with a suggested retail price. Unfortunately, we are unable to control what they decide to sell the figures for. We want to assure you that we are dedicated to maintaining quality products and service. We hope you and your family will continue to enjoy our products for many years to come. Again, thank you for contacting us. Last edited by onefastbird95; 04-07-2008 at 11:50 AM.. I agree that the price hike does suck but with the state of the economy as it is right now I can kind of understand it.
I remember back in '83 (I already sound old!) my mom purchasing a Cobra Officer for me and it was priced at $3.29. I thought that was expensive at the time (as they were going for two-something). Considering that is only $1.59 more for a figure after 25 years I would say we were extremely lucky to get them for the low prices while we could given the rate of inflation over the years. But yes I am going to miss the lower prices and it looks like my troop building is going to go from a squad of troops (about 10) to a fire team now (about 4 troops)! |

I think ill do the same. only talk about the lack of distribution as well. How is it that collectors in a major area like southern cali have to stake out stores for one case of figures?
Nice letter. |

Southern California seems like it's a black hole for these 25th Joes. It should be the exact opposite, though.

I Agree (with a capital A)
What is wrong with the distribution? I rarely see Joes in store anymore! but I see Starwars figures JAM-PACKED on the shelf! Same company! I hope we will see more cases on shelf JUST like Starwars & Transformers!

Well how about this one... We up here in Canada are paying $9.99 per single figure at Toys'R'Us and we don't even get American packaging.
It's funny, last I checked, our money was in parity yet I am paying almost 50% more than you per figure. Personally I would love to pay $6.84 per figure - so I honestly can't sympathize with you... I envy you. Last edited by Counterpoint; 04-04-2008 at 11:28 PM.. |
