I read this on TV Tropes
Did Not Do The Research: Shipwreck of few Joes to wear an actual military uniform even remotely close to being sat. Too bad he's a chief, and Chiefs do not wear the Navy's white hat. He's clearly a first class petty officer in the original series (three chevrons, no "umbrella"), though canonically he would be promoted to chief in later incarnations (chiefs also wear khaki, not the blue dungarees Shipwreck wore anyhow). So the outfit is fairly accurate for its time. His trademark beard did become against regulation halfway through the cartoon's run, however (as well as wearing the white "dixie cup" with dungarees was phased out in favor of command ball caps in the mid 90s). I googled the uniform, I don't think it works quite aswell as the 1982(?) uniform. Chief Petty Officer uniform - Google Search So, think we'd ever see a 'correct', shaven suited Shipwreck? EDIT: On Yo Joe, I read he's been a Chief Petty Officer, Navy SEAL and a Sailor. What is he currently anyway? Last edited by Shinobi Sentai; 03-23-2010 at 06:19 AM.. |

No way should he ever shave - the beard is essential! GI Joe is a special unit, so rules like that don't apply anyway. Furthermore, Joes wear what they want.
That said, as a military man myself, I'd love to see some of the characters in proper dress greens, blues and khakis as alternate versions. We see them enough in these uniforms in the old comic, and they'd look great on the deck of the Flagg or in the HQ, if not riding around on their vehicles in the field. It'd be really nice to get a 25th version of Shipwreck in his "Devil's Due" attire (for that matter it'd be a nice RAH figure as well - right GIJCC?), with the navy blue or black sweater and watch cap. Oh, and for the record, you can be a Chief Petty Officer (rank), a Navy SEAL (trade) and a sailor (branch).

I think I read somewhere the reason of the work deniums was he always felt even though he was promoted to E7, he was a working man. Being a gunner he was also in the thick of work with the guns etc..
He felt the khaki's were for officers and so.. he chose to wear them. TO show rank under him that he was still one of them. As someone mentioned earlier.. g.i.joe does wear what they seem to... Jerseys and football helmets instead of pots and ACU or woodland BDUs... CPO SEAL Gunner You`re still a sailor. so yeah these can be one person

To further HD's explanation, it's also the reason why the Navy recently switched their common work uniform to Navy BDU's and Service uniform to the blue/khaki http://www.thedeckplates.com/wordpre...07/navy-su.jpg "charlies" that resemble that of other branches where designation of rank is now left solely with collar devices.
Nonetheless the Joe's sailor, was created in the mid-80s where the dungaree uniform was the working standard uniform for enlisted. His rank has always been that of a CPO (E-7). The lack of the "umbrella" in the early years was design flaw. If you look at the cards, though. The umbrella is present. Now if you're asking for a modern uniform, I have to say that you've already got in. In the VvsV line, he wore green BDUs and the black/grey BDUs that are now the common working uniform for the Navy. But that was mostly because at this point, he was designated as a SEAL and the combat uniform for such is BDUs. Will you see a Shipwreck in proper dress uniform, well... I'm sure we have a few sailors here that would likely take that custom challenge on. But the only Joe to be given a full-dress uniform was Gung-Ho.

He did shave when he first became a SEAL.
The DDP was based on his Spytroops uni.

I still want to know WHY they had to make him a SEAL, when we already had at least two or three SEALs as it was ? :(
DON'T get me wrong, I am NOT anti-SEAL (nothing could be further from the truth w/ every member of my family in the service having had been in the Navy ). I just found it silly he had to become a "SEAL" b/c it was the popular thing to do. He could have been well enough left alone just as a "sailor". Plus the original uniform / version of Shipwreck makes him easy to pick out as the "Navy guy" from the other Joes. Besides, can anyone REALLY see the cartoon Shipwreck going through SEAL hell week? Ha! PS - The DDP Shipwreck ROCKS!

Hey while we are at it, I need a 25th Shipwreck - loose is fine - looking for the original style Shipwreck as discussed here - either the first one or the "happy" one that came in the last 5 pack.
LMK, thanks -

I can't answer that except that Navy SEAL teams are equivalent to USMC Recon/Army Ranger and so on. Also, it's just very unlikely for a standard "white hat" to be involved in combat scenarios. Are there alternatives, yes. I wasn't a SEAL but I saw combat working with the Marines (hence, the FMF badge on my siggy). They could have even made him SWCC. It would have been cool to see Shipwreck a "combat sailor" on other terms but my guess is just a lack of knowledge and research made him a SEAL.
