OK, so not really a conspiracy theory at all, just a theory.
So we've asked Hasbro a few times in Q and A's about this, and it's always been shrugged off by them as not really a possibility. I've always wondered/wished that Hasbro would use compatible bodies across it's now rather large body of properties, because it would look so much better when my toylines are displayed together. It seems to be there would be a huge cost savings to Hasbro in being able to use the same body parts for all the lines. Hasbro now has GI Joe, Marvel Universe/Spiderman/Iron Man, Star Wars, the defunct Indiana Jones lines, etc. It can't possibly be cheaper to create new molds for use only within those lines, than it would be to share molds across the lines. We already know that when in a pinch, they'll share tooling - SDCC Commander proved that. But only in a pinch like that. I think the real reason Hasbro doesn't want to create compatibility across their 3.75" lines is to create brand identity. Or, I say better, to create brand separation. I think Hasbro wants MU to be different from GI Joe, and GI Joe to be different from Star Wars not just in packaging, but also in the overall design of the figures, and subsequently in articulation and sculpt. I think it's purposefully kept separate so that anyone can tell by first glance that yes, that is a Joe figure, and no, that's not, it's a Marvel figure, even if both figures are wearing jeans and a button up shirt. I think they don't want kids mixing and matching, but collecting separate lines, and keeping the figures subtly incompatible is one way to do that. Kids are likely to buy more when collecting two of something than mixing and matching. They still try to make the figures "compatible" aesthetically to a degree, so that War Machine and Cappy can be played with alongside kid's Joe collections (or vice versa), but they want it very clear that these are two separate lines that look ok together, not one line with characters from different universes. What do you guys think?

That's actually a very interesting theory.

The strangest thing that I found was even in the Indy Jones line things were different. I had 3 Indy figures and all of them had different sized head pegs.
What is up with that?

I have to disagree. As a kid, scale uniformity did not even occur to me. Optimus Prime could battle alongside Snake Eyes and Luke Skywalker because of an interdimensional portal that brought all of these warring factions together to fight.
Kids do not care, they will get what appeals and seems cool to them then figure it out. |

THe different construction also allows them to have an Iron Man line and have Iron Man appear in the Marvel Universe line.
I cared about scale. It drove me crazy the different sizes of Transformers and how hard it was to use 'em together. Optimus Prime and Huffer were supposed to both be trucks, but you couldn't use them together.

Edit: One example is WizKids' HeroClix line of game/figures. The DC and Marvel games actually have different rules. They are easily worked out to be able to work together, but the rules for their abilities, the color codes, etc are different because said companies didn't want ownership intermingled. |
