What/Who are your troops of choice and how many do you have? I think some of the sheer numbers would be eyebrow raising! Where do you get them? Also, why do you troop build and when? For me, I go in spurts. I'll buy a bunch and then take a break. Also, I troop build and never display them all! I know that I can't be the only one.. I think as a kid it was something that I always wanted to do, but what parent is going to buy you crazy multiples of any toy? Now it's a matter of the fact that I can, so I do! When I see a lot available it's hard for me not to buy, especially if its a good deal. On occasion, there's buyers remorse of sorts and I have to ask myself: What the hell am I doing?? :o)
For me it's a lot of fun regardless and at some point I'll line em' all up and stare in amazement. But until then, I'll continue to amass them in anticipation of that moment and continue to grow my "army" of JOES. So to all you troop builders out there, do tell... |

First, NO Joes. I have and always will be a COBRA warlord and am proud of that fact. To list the sum total of my COBRA legions would take too long but in total I have a standing army of over a thousand different COBRA troops, spread over RAH types, JvC new figure sculpts, and of course 25th/ME.
It never occured to me as a kid to army build mass numbers of COBRA troops, because the various Vipers, CGs, and BATs were always cooler in my mind than COBRA's unique characters. So I thought of the troops as individuals. It was only after I returned to the hobby after some years did I begin troop building my COBRA legions, but this was motivated in part to a newfound and quickly growing affection with real time strategy games. Also, unlike when I was a kid, I've since created my own custom character to lead COBRA in my Joeverse. The method to how I amass my forces is complex and unique. One of the primal, if not most important factor, is the design of the trooper. Second is colors, and in that I prefer purple, black, red, and gray. Blues, tans, greens, and other colors I'll sometimes agree to but mostly if they correspond to specific duty needs (blue for arctic and naval, green for medical and chemical weapons, tan and brown for desert, etc.) Lastly the more basic the troop-type is in ranking the more I collect. For example I may have almost 200 basic Vipers, but never more Crimson Guards than that. Prices of course can factor into how and what I buy. But I'm so specific in terms of what I buy I'll gladly wait until prices are right to get the quantity I want, unless there's a supply issue. In some cases if a deal is good enough I'll splurge even if the COBRA troop-type in question doesn't meet all my criteria, but those are rare cases. As to buyer's remorse - that's something each of us needs to grapple with. I still look at my collection, as it still grows day by day, and sometimes question whether I've lost my mind, but I've still managed to hold onto to it and will do so as long as I can. Ever since I saw "Arise, Serpentor, Arise" for the first time on TV when I was 6, I've counted myself as a member of COBRA and probably always will and my army is a testament to that. Hail COBRA. |

I don't know.. I think it's pretty self-explanatory. Who, what, when, where, why... 5 W's. But thanks for the remark.

I have a few Pit Comandos and Greenshirts but mostly its Cobra army builders.I have a lot of bats not all of which are being displayed, same goes for blueshirts,Night creepers, Red Ninjas and and CGs.I have a few Alley Vipers and Range Vipers but I consider them special forces .Oh yeah I have about 10 Para-Vipers and Bazooka Troopers also.I like the Idea of Cobra having limitless #s of troops and the Joe team only having the best of the best from all branches of the service.I really dont have a limit to how many of a figure I will buy I have over 70 cgs and probably over 50 bats and if the troop builder sets are released I'll get more.So who Cobras,What all the cool ones(no neo vipers),when anytime I can, where, where ever gi joe fiigures are sold for a decent price,Why I'm sick (ocd).I hope this is what you wanted to hear Hasbro

I agree, especially with the inclusion of 101 in the title, I definitely thought it was going to be more of a, (who, what, when, where & why) you need to build such and such troopers.

i agree on the title, but nevermind that.
i troop build only if they were throwbacks, if they are roc, i only build em if they are dope. when i got into this i was building in the 20's and above, then was like ok f that, this shits expensive lol. so minimized my numbers to 10. so now on everything is in tens. where do i buy em? wherever they are sold. online tru.com always let you buy more than one, hts only let you buy 1. so if tru had what i wanted i cleared em out. (you are welcome for those who are saying thanks) if i see em in the store i would buy what i needed and leave what i didn't. and the whole thing that got me back into joes was, i haven't had a gi joe since 89 or some shit, and seen em and was like wow. right then i had this invision of this massive cobra and joe army, and a giant dioramma. and when i was a kid my ma couldn't afford what i wanted, so now as a man, i get what i want. at times i was like dude wtf you doin? this is very irresponsible, but then i just think, hell it will look dope when all set up. and as long as im on the tank , it is hard to not buy joes, and just stop collecting. the tank plays a big part in me buying joes, from collecting to customizing. so when i go bankrupt, the owner of the tank is getting sued. kind'a like the over weight idiot that sued mcdonalds for super size, that now i can't have super size cus they had a eating problem and needed an escape goat for the reason why.. oh right quick, the only reason i don't have all my shit displayed is , i don't have the room right now to do so, or the room for a dio. so build em, pack em, store em, and wait till the time comes to display em.. |

But meh... If this is what you were looking for... I army-build Cobra Vipers and since the 25th Blueshirt was so awesome, them as well. Then the 25th vehicles came along and I saw the ability to have an actual platoon of Hiss Tanks! A Squadron of Rattlers! So now I army- build Cobra aircraft and Hiss Tanks, Cobra troopers and Vipers, a little bit of Eels (just too pricey everywhere) and now since I'm building an Aircraft Carrier, I am army building Joe aircraft and the senior sea command to man my ship. Over 30 Tripwires grant me additional pilots for all the PTE and True Heroes and WPK aircraft that don't have their own pilots. |

Who: Uh, me.
What: Primarily basic Cobra infantry, i.e. Blueshirts and Vipers. I usually go for squads of six because of price, shelf-room and variety factors. For example, I can't have thirty original BATs on display because a) they cost too much, and b/c) I don't have the space if I also want to have some Vipers, CGs, vehicles, etc. The sheer amount of repaints in the 25th line has helped me to build even the main infantry guys in squads of six, i.e. I have six red sigil troops from the original pack, six more with silver, making twelve, which is alright with me. I'm currently looking for four more chrome-faced Vipers from the 5-pack to round out my Viper forces, and a couple red-faced BATs to round out my BATs. When: When do I get them? Kind of a mix. I get what I can when they're released but in certain cases, I hope I can work out a trade or a buy from another army-builder who got sick of them, then I can save a bit if they're opened usually. Where: Where do I find them? Not often at retail, though Canada's a bit better now that the RoC stuff is out. On Ebay, although more lately it's been here and other forums, or at the Con. Why: Because if you didn't army-build, Cobra displays would look pathetically small, and I like seeing little armies on display, like they're on parade or something. It's a tradition that goes back to people collecting the old lead soldiers back in the pre-plastic toy days. It's cool.
