ROC was the last attempt to create a SW-like action figure line on a massive scale. Transformers don't really count as action figures IMO but ROC was really the last attempt to create a massive line-up of action figures and vehicles that could come close to what we saw with Star Wars. Avatar has no where as many figures or vehicles and I don't see any movie coming out in the next 4 years that could equal ROC in it's scale.
I think we will look back @ 2009 as the last grasp of toy makers trying to produce action figures for the masses (ROC, Avatar, Star Trek, Terminator, Wolverine) and from here on out it will be only niche products for as long as interest remains high enough to justify their production.

There's no way that Iron Man will be produced in the same scale (multiple figures and characters) as ROC.
If anyone knows of anything that could equal ROC in its scale within the next 4 years please correct me.

They appear to only occupy the same amount of pegs as the GI JOE 25th Anniv did. I agree there's a lot of potential with that line and that line alone might be the future of Hasbro's action figure business because of the depth and breadth of Marvel characters and story lines.
I don't think a single move-based action figure line in 2009 sold as well as anticipated especially the poor Star Trek and Terminators figures that TRU was basically giving away last week to clear them out.

The Pirates of the Caribbean line had a pretty decent run and in simplicity where probably the most similar to the original Star Wars line...

If Hasbro wanted this to be as massive as Star Wars they should have(IMHO) sold the Modern Era/Resolute line side by side with it, the same way they sell Star Wars; Legacy Collection and Clone Wars side by side.
I like both lines, and collect both, I would have done the same with ROC Joes and Modern Era/Resolute had they been sold simultaneously. The business model of putting a desired series on hiatus for a movie line is risky; yes some movie lines, like TF1 from 2007 do SPECTACULAR but this isn't always the case. I don't see ROC doing anywhere near as bad as Indiana Jones, but in some respects it does remind me of Spiderman 3. So going forward, I hope Hasbro brings back the Modern Era line sooner than later, to sell alongside any future media tie in lines. Something for everyone, win/win situation, make the vehicles compatible for both as shown with the current Star Wars vehicles. |

With most larger retailers reducing the size of the toy section to make more room for more profitable things like the pharmacy and food sections I think the era of large (single themed) action figure lines has come to an abrupt conclusion. Toys are usually loss leader for stores since they are used to get parents into the store and therefore they put the toy section in the back to make they walk through as many other departments first.
Large retail stores have major issues in the coming years as toy demand continues to decrease and as next generation video game systems (within the next 3-4 years) move to downloading games exclusively therefore killing off the retail store cash cow of video game sales.

To Hasbro's credit they did everything they could to create hype for the GI JOE brand from 2007-2009: 1. Mostly fantastic 25th Anniversary figures and vehicles 2. Re-releasing RAH episodes in great DVD battle packs 3. A great (but short) animated series with Resolute 3. ROC movie with large advertising budget (even though the movie was mismanaged) 4. Lots of ROC figures and exclusives 5. Releasing the entire RAH series in an incredible package. If theses thing collectively could not reignite the brand and create and a new generation of fans than nothing can at this point.

I would love it if all movie lines scaled down their releases. For the Iron Man movie I only wanted the Mk III armor and Iron Monger, and it was just sort of sad to see the huge assortment sit on the pegs.
For Star Trek, I would have bought the whole line, but I tested the waters by buying Kirk and decided not to jump in. I'd rather the companies release several quality figures than attempt to cram several versions of every minor character down our throats. |
