I wonder if the modern lines sell as good as in G.I. Joe's golden days in the Eighties where you live...
Do the figures, vehicles and playsets move as fast as they did back then? Out here in Belgium, it's quite a disaster. I spoke with several toy store owners and they all said the same thing: the Rise of Cobra stuff (the only Joe toys available here) just doesn't sell. I was quite shocked by that because when I was a kid in the Eighties, G.I. Joe spread like wildfire. Of course you had the animated show to support the line back then. We also had one of the best fanclubs which made kids wanna buy more stuff even more. Now all that is gone and we just have the movie to support the line. Apparently that just isn't enough. I really wonder why Hasbro didn't resurrect the Belgian G.I. Joe club... They didn't even bother to have 'collect the points' mail away-figures... (Something the recent Indy line did have out here...) I contact Hasbro to ask them what the future of G.I. Joe holds out here and they didn't reply. Not a good sign. I bet it's gonna be curtains here pretty soon after only one friggin' wave! Anyway, I hope the new stuff sells a lot better where you guys live... |

Hard to say. There were more on the shelves back then, but there wasn't as much product either. What we've seen in a half year for RoC product would have been 1.5-2 years worth of stuff back in the day, if not more.
So how does that translate to sales? I don't know really. Simple looking at it would seem like RoC sells more. Say back in the 80s there were 9 new figures a year, that's 9 sales for one person in that year. Now there's 32 (??) new figures that year, that's 32 sales for one person in that year. So yeah, that means more sales overall. So I guess that means RoC would be selling more.

Though it should definitely be noted that vehicles and playsets were more numerous and sold in higher volumes "back in the day."
We'd get a double-handful of new figures, but also a good dozen or so vehicles/playsets of varying sizes. Now a line is lucky if there's a half-dozen truly "new" vehicles in any given year (IE not just repaints/slight retools). |

When all the averages are taken into account, inflation, product margin etc... I think Joes and Toys in general do not sell as well now as they did in the 80s. But that is just an educated guess, I can't back that up.
However, I did read that action figure sales this year as opposed to the toy industry as a whole made a profit where as toys on the whole did not.

I can tell you that when our local TRU opened when I was in my early teens. By then my Joe days were behind me, but the Joes got about two to three colums of 6 pegs back then. Now Joes get 5 colums for just the RoC 3.75's, not to mention the Moderns, and different sized figures.
Last week when they had that 2 day sale I went on Friday morning. The pegs were full, my girlfriend went back on Monday, and said there were literally 10 figures left. 10. She said she counted because she honestly couldn't believe it herself. There were over 1000 Joes on that rack Friday morning. Joe never sold like that as far as I can remember. Ever. -13 |

As for which, Roc or 80's. No doubt it was ARAH from the 80's that sold more. I'm sure those didn't shelf or peg warm like ROC. |

I would say no. Kids these days are more into videos and with rare exceptions, action figures are "old people's toys" to most of them. They would prefer Bakugan/Ben 10 over the grittiness of joe.
But have I seen kids buying them? Yes. But there isn't the whole movement to get them. Then again, thrift stores are the indicator of what sold. If I find a bunch of RoC joes at the flea markets and thrift stores next year, that means a ton of kids bought them. I found a ton of 2007 Transformers. |

Back in the 80s Gi Joe sold great over here in the UK under the name Action Force. There wasnt even a cartoon on tv, only VHS. But nowadays they dont seem to be selling at all, not even with the movie being released. Well not in my local TRU anyway, they dont seem to be moving at all, everyone seems to be more interested in Clone Wars toys.

I doubt it. It is competing with properties such as Bakugan and the slew of card/point based creature fighting games that came before it that captures the younger crowd. Otherwise I don't see older children playing with actions figures to much any longer. It seems anything Marvel or DC does is for the adult crowd. Star Wars may keep pumping out new toys, and it has a toon to back it up, so if anything that is pulling away buyers. The shows like Ben 10 and Secret Saturdays now have toys for those older children that I don't see buying too many toys any longer. It's def not like the 80s.
