Another day, another rant her on Hisstank.
After reading today's thread http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...99-target.html I was amazed with the usual coments from many 'Tankers' about quitting the hobby because it is getting to expensive. This topic of rising prices has become a yearly thing and it will continue to happen. Here are a few of the many threads regarding price increases: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...ces-gijoe.html http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...ce-6-84-a.html http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...99-target.html http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...es-9-89-a.html It's bad enough that many aren't happy with the Retaliation toy line because of everything from less articulation to having a basic card art throughout the entire line. I myself have not been a completist since early 2009. So I ask my fellow 'Tankers' are you done with the Joe brand or what? |

All of the previous price increases didn't keep me from buying Joes. But $10.99 will. It's actually timely for me since I'm caught up, except for Lifeline. That and I didn't really want anything from the Retaliation line anyway. So for the time being, I am done with current Joe stuff.

I couldnt quit collecting Joes; its just too much fun.
If prices go up, i will just cut back on troop builders, and most likely won't make any purchases for mint on card figures....though i think the crappy packaging will already make that decision for me. as it is now, i'm already not buying many vehicles, and since the new line will have vehicle drivers with green lantern style articulation, i'll probably be buying even fewer vehicles. My wife would certainly like me to quit collecting, but nah...just can't do it. |

Yeah I'm not done...honestly I just am going to be a little more chosey...some of the 'less' articulated figures are not gonna get added to the collection for sure.

What I don't get is how people quitting/boycotting the movie line think they're going to help the line at all. In no way will NOT buying Joes help the franchise out - you're not telling Hasbro you're fed up, you're telling them they should just STOP MAKING JOES. If the Retalliation line fails, you can forget about seeing Joes on store shelves. WalMart, Target, TRU - they'll just stop carrying them. Hell, my local WalMart hasn't carried them since ROC, and TRU has only paid the line lip-service for the most part in the last two years.
In my mind, Retalliation is Joe's last stand before at least a hiatus. It's been too iffy in the marketplace for too long, seen too many failures (sigma six anyone?), and not lived up to expectations too often. We fans clamor online for things, like new Skystrikers, then don't buy them when we get them. Meanwhile, we bitch and moan about Hasbro putting out superior action figures because the birck and mortar stores won't sell them - they won't sell them because no one bought enough of them! Kids aren't buying them, and collectors aren't picking up the slack, and haven't for a number of years. If Retalliation tanks, don't expect to go back to 30th or 25th figures - We'll be going back to the mid 90s, when there were NO JOES at all. I can't tell anyone that they should pay 12 bucks for a Joe figure - if you can't afford that, you probably shouldn't be buying little plastic men in the first place, and I do know it'll cut down on my own spending on the Joe line. And if you don't like the looks of the Retaliation figures, I'm not going to tell you to buy them - no one should buy something they don't want just because. But don't go thinking that by NOT buying them, Hasbro's going to realize "their mistakes" and start putting out new figures. They're just going to say "we're making money on Transformers and Marvel and Star Wars - Joe can't carrying a profit margin, it's gone." |

To the rest of your points, I doubt most collectors are entertaining the idea of easing up on purchasing at this new, higher price point out of moral outrage (though some will surely state that) or to teach Hasbro a lesson. It all comes down to economics. If a buyer doesn't think a $10+ figure is worth it, it's not getting bought. If Hasbro (or, more likely, a retailer) can't make the profit margin work to sell a figure for less, the line may buckle. For me personally, I can only think of a handful of characters I will be willing to pay over $10 for, and then only if they're of a caliber of excellence on par with most of the PoC/30th offerings. |

I don't see myself quitting. Higher price point has always meant that I will probably be able to afford fewer of them - that's just simple math. But I enjoy them far too much to just quit.

Higher point means I become more critical of figures and wait for TJ Maxx/Marshals patiently.

I don't like it when people say things like "if you can't afford that, you probably shouldn't be buying little plastic men in the first place." The very point of this particular thread is to gauge the reaction to the price increase on joe figures and whether or not those people affected by the newer price point will decide to still collect joes. My economic situation is exactly that, mine. No one should be telling me if i should buy something or not. Even people who earn a crap ton more than me will still have to make the personal choice about spending upwards of $10 a figure and whether or not those figures are actually "worth it" to them.
Like i said before, the increase in price, though i'm not fond of, will likely not stop me from buying joes....though it may keep me from buyig as many as i do now. But now that i think about, i've actually purchased several joes at the already high $10.99 price from walgreens, so maybe i won't be affected much, if at all anyway. |
