I remember when the NAC first came out, I was intrigued, but ultimately disappointed in it by comparison with the bbi Pave Hawk and Apache and similar helicopters that I had been seeing. Yes, it had a lot of detail, but there was a lot wrong with it. The general proportions (it seemed "stumpy"), the bulbous nose and canopy, the overall soft curves instead of sharp, crisp corners, the visible screw holes, the tiny wheels, even the shape of the props (which at the time I thought were needlessly stylized, though I've since heard they'd actually be quite effective this way).
In general, I'm more an old school fan, the latter toys always seemed too juvenile for me -- too many rounded edges which seem "safer" and too lacking in the sort of crisp, realistic detail seen in earlier Joe vehicles. Plus, we rarely see opening hatches and realistic engines etc. anymore. So I passed. But years have gone by, and while I still love the harder-edged, more realistic military toys, I've softened on the aesthetic of the Joe toys of the 2000's. I think the recently reissued RHINO started things off -- once I picked that up, I had to have the ROCC, and that opened the door for an appreciation of some of the aesthetic stylings of that era. And the thing is, there's a lot to love in the NAC. I picked one up recently -- sadly could not find a great price, but did okay, this thing does not seem to show up on eBay all that much -- and I really am happy with it. The colors are really striking, that black and dark green work really well together. The head-on profile, with the missile launchers, is really impressive. There's something to the pug-nosed brawler type of appearance. In fact, I've really come to like the shape of the whole thing, this sort of brutal, aggressive gunship. The missile pods on the two wings may be unrealistically large to accommodate a firing mechanism, but they also seem very menacing. The somewhat anime-inspired proportions do, in the end, make for an interesting, kinda cool chopper. (I do think the added plug-on guns are a bit much, so I tend to leave them off, other than the nose gun) I like the roominess of the cockpit, the way the pilot's seat folds down to allow you to more easily place troops in the back. Not all 25th figs fit, but I could get Tunnel Rat in the front with Lady Jaye in the back along with a kitbashed ROC Hawk. And the gimmicks actually kind of work for me. Yes, the wheels are tiny, and the way the main bulk of the thing just rests flat on the ground is kinda weird. But the fold-down trigger is fun, firing the missiles is cool, and I like the rotor trigger. Again, the aesthetics may be harmed by it, but it's fun. In the end, this is one of my favorite Joe toys. It's a very different kind of helicopter from both the Dragonfly and the ROC Dragonhawk, and I like it as a nice change of pace from the bbi Apache and Pave Hawk. I also picked up the desert camo version (that one I DID get a great price on) and it makes a fantastic companion to the MCC and my custom desert Triple T. One thing I love about the Joe line: there's always something cool or fun that you may have missed, always more to explore.... Law |

It's not bad for a post-'86 vehicle. Picked mine up for 10 bucks on clearance, and it was well worth that, but it simply doesn't fit in with my collecting tastes now. So in the closet it stays.

That crazy looking thing is probably the closest we'll ever get to a Hind. If we only had Oktober Guard figs it's be perfect for them.

I got the one my son has on clearance for $10 as well. Same as what I paid for Cobra Mountain and the Grizzly.

The NAC is an excellent chopper. 25th Lift Ticket's piloting mine. He just barely fits.

I really dig the NAC (and it does look great with the "new sculpt era" RAH-style Oktober Guard figures if you don't have that ridiculously hard to find bbi Mini-Hind). I'm also a fan of the Patriot Grizzly.

i felt the same about this chopper when i first pulled it out of a big box of Joe stuff i bought from a Craig's list ad. it grew on me a little( it was missing 2 rotors and the canopy) but then i picked up the Cobra version the Crimson Command Copter. this one is more or less complete and that when i realized I've got and HIND here.the gimmicks are passable and i really love the bulkiness of the thing, with the weapon sponsons deployed it looks like its ready to get up and attack on its own. all and all one mean looking piece. BTW does anyone have a canopy and a few main rotors for it. thought id throw that one in there.
