let's see.
# when i head over the Marvel Universe area, and see the newest wave with crease or folded marks on the cards. yeah, these people make excuses that shipping damage them up. yeah right. i even remember a member from Fwoosh forums also seeing the same guy. i think that guy followed the "suspect" all the way to his car and threatened him with a baseball bat or something. # when the associate at the register asks you if you collect them. i was at Ross the other day and got both of the 7-packs. and the cute lady told me that there were people buying a lot of them.

I think the scalper market may actually be leveling out in the past couple years. Oh sure there'll be a few items here and there that are "hot" and command big bucks on ebay when they first hit, but generally with the economy being in the toiletbowl the scalpers' primary audience hasn't had as much leisure money to pay hyperinflated prices for the latest "hot" item. In my area, most lines are pretty easy to find (DCUC being an exception, but that may be less due to scalping and more due to simply not being heavily stocked in the first place), as long as you're reasonably patient and check the stores maybe a couple times a week.
As others have noted, a lot of people are quick to see empty pegs (or at least all the "popular/new" figures gone) and scream "Scalperz!" but when you think about it it could just as easily be another collector who cleaned out your local stores. This was especially prevalent with the 25A collection, when many collectors would buy a full assortment at a time (plus any extra troop builders) if they found it on shelves. The stores would go from fully stocked to nearly-bare pegs with one shopper. |

When people I know at the store says the same few people are there at opening on certain days and buy out most of the stock, especially when "most of the stock" means almost every current line. I only know so many people who buy *every* toy line...

Scalpers exist but i think they only really cross the line when they damage the cards and assault other customers and paying off store employees umm hiding product is borderline

It's just something they made up to scare kids, like the Boogie Man or Michael Jackson.

Scalpers... Here in NYC I have never seen scalpers, I have however seen shipments brought from the back with the cases open and all the "rare" "hard to find" figures notably missing form the cases.
If someone wants to be a "scalper" more power to them. I've bought and sold figures online, hell considering the online only stuff sometimes it's just easier. |
