My wife and I actually tried that with a friend that had a shop back in 1999 when Episode 1 hit. We all went in together and purchased a contract with Hasbro, because we wanted to do the legit capitalistic thing, and got severely screwed over by Hasbro. Since we were considered a Mom & Pop shop we were charged more per case than your mass retailer. In turn, in order to just BREAK EVEN we had to charge more per figure than the mass-market retailer. This was something we were aware of pre-contract, so that was not necessarily a problem. Having product knowledge and a general feel for the market we knew what we needed and when we needed it in order to make the contract work.
The problem came in when they began delaying our shipments (by up to 2 months), sending us product we did not order, and changing our figure assortments after the order with promises that the correct cases were on their way. Then they refused to send us more unless we extended our contract, and had to fight just to get what we paid for after we cancelled the contract. We lost a $#!t-load of money, and a lot of respect that I had for Hasbro. I'm not defending scalpers at all, but it is not that easy to get a contract with Hasbro and make it work in a way that's not completely one-sided in Hasbro's favor. but I don't have a printer and you have to print a application and fax it to them. As a matter of fact they're up the street from me. I just need to set a day to go. I know some dude that is going through the same thing you did but with Mattel. There are other ways to getting this stuff, but anyway you said that you had to sell your figures for way more to make a profit and thats what these guys are doing.

All this makes me realize that scalpers need to be treated as a minority. As someone pointed out in another post collectors are treated as criminals...well we cannot allow the noble and majestic scalper to become a victim, we must preserve their species and noble legacy...
To watch them nobly stride the toy filled plains, sinews and pot bellies rippling as they stalk their prey.... |

I have only seen one person who i could have called a scalper.
at a TRU... it was a woman who had a shopping cart with a modest load and i wouldn't have cared, but i saw her damaging bubbles on carded figures and putting them back. she was doing this to Spawn and another toy line in particular. i went up front and got the manager, but all i could do was show him the damaged packaging. i am 99% positive she was. But as far as identifying marks, features or habits, you can't really point 'em out. unless you find the retarded, soon to be extinct, albino ones that stand in the Parking lot of TRU selling you a MOC, 25th Major Bludd figure for 50 bucks...(for example)

The one bad thing concerning the Tank members is they (not all but a lot) label anyone who they see purchase more than one figure as a scalper even though most of us either buy two of each or troop build. Scalpers are nothing more than business men....... People just need to get over it. Let them do their thing and you do yours....
For those of you who need to know....... I have never sold, traded or bought a joe from anyone on the Tank, e-bay, Craig's list, etc. So don't call me a scalper for defending them. |

Hard to say, particularly with Joes given the army building for one.
Considering also people grabbing extras for friends, trades, customs, or an extra to open or keep packaged, it would be hard to judge someone unless you saw them often. I have a decent idea, since comics and all other collectibles were really big around here starting 20 years ago, so there are several familiar faces that have worked at and traded with stores, although lately I don't see anyone. On the other hand, many of them are also collectors, so I can't judge. Then there's the gray area of selling just to invest more money in your own collection. You won't see many scalpers though. They are often at stores daily before opening, or on shipment days, or have an inside contact. This certainly isn't to say all people with these traits is scalping, but many scalpers have these traits. The biggest sign I've seen? Some guy at TRU 10 years ago in the Star Wars aisle asking my friends if they wanted to come buy Yakfsfe figures out of his truck! It was a rare vintage figure because it wasn't released in the US...the 90s version was only rare because morons like this bought them up assuming it would be as desireable. Hope he still has a truckload of figs that are worth $3 or so now. |

Only thing that was being scalped in my area was cobra commander when he first hit (hoses).
Currently the Pit Commandos seem hard to catch . One item that keeps flying is the new Halo series in wallymart My son likes them with Joes , i guess power armor type. |
