As I told you in this other thread - http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...ollection.html - I've been dedicating more time to assembling my GIJoe colection. And I need a piece of advise - I'm sure this is the place to get it.
I've been getting some hard to find figures (I live in Brazil, mind you - it's hard to find any figure in here) and I'm pretty satisfied with that, but there's one other aspect of the collection that I think I should give more attention to: vehicles. I don't care that much for some vehicles, but I do care a lot for others. I just let 2 Skystrikers pass in a Brazilian auction site because I needed the money to get figures (and we pay around US$ 15-20 a 25th/ME figure here - I'm NOT kidding). But I feel I should have got at least one of them - although the Skystriker is not as hard to get as some figures around here. What I want to know is: How do you do it? Do you just get what you like the most (figure or vehicle), what is there for you to get (a Skystriker - GO FOR IT!!!) or do you get one here, the other there... As I said, it's hard to get almost any figure around here - and it's even harder to army build. Please have that in mind. I know it's not the easiest of questions but I trust your feelings on this subject! Thanks in advance. |

When it's something I kinda want, but don't need it right away I will wait until I find a deal. Then there are some vehicles where I just decide I need one and I need it now. So really it's about the mood I'm in and how much extra money I have at the time.

I think it depends on if and how you display your collection. If something like a Skystriker really doesn't have much of a place, or if you dont have much room for one, then the fact that you passed it up means you probably don't need it. I don't display at all and room is very much a problem.
I also think collecting select items comes down to factors of desire and impulse. If there is some item you really want or fondly remember, you'll seek it out. Impulse comes in when you see something pretty cool that you may not have searched for otherwise, but the price is good, so you go for it. Many people also are fond of certain themes. They'll collect a lot of snow related figures, and you've got to have a few arctic vehicles to go with them, right? Or, there may be that magic year or 2 as a kid where they really got into Joes, so they try to complete a collection of that year, or Modern era stuff based on it. As for me, I only get vintage if it costs next to nothing or is free, and most Modern Era with the exception of some repaints or exclusives where the price isn't worth it to me. |

I'm more interested in the figures than vehicles, because vehicles take up a bunch of space. Now, I do have plenty of vehicles especially 1982-86, but I'm not a completest in that area.
I focus on completing my ARAH figure collection from 1982-87. I have most everything from the 25th or ME line. The ROC stuff I'm pickier about only getting 3 vehicles so far along with about 30 figures. Pick something or a theme and stick with it if money concerns you. If you aren't a completest or an army builder then just get what you like.

Hmmm. People collect for different reasons and purposes. Personally, my collection runs with a particular theme in mind, and more for posing, dios, and play rather than MOC display and acquisition of bragging rights. So, even if certain figures are highly prized by many but don't really fit my theme and purposes (like the SDCC PDD Destro), I won't even lift a finger to try to get it. Whereas, if a figure is highly prized and is priced accordingly (I once bought a Beachhead figure for the equivalent of US$12 and a visored Snake Eyes for US$16) and fits my theme and purpose, I'd get it if I can afford it. Of course, I also consider certain factors like the possibility of this particular figure coming out again in an improved version later, or will there be many of these made, or will this possibly go on sale soon. Hit and miss mostly, though. I bought a black HISS for the equivalent of US$30 from a "hobby specialty shop" because I didn't think Joe vehicles would ever be sold on mainstream retail here. Until now, no black HISS among the vehicles (but I sure am glad these other vehicles eventually did!) sold here, but BBTS did eventually lower their prices to about half of what I originally paid for. This is why the Tank is such a Godsend because here I can monitor trends and see what I like and don't like among what's coming. This is especially helpful in places like Brazil where this stuff is hard to come by, that you might have to jump at an opportunity that might be gone in a matter of hours. Here in the Philippines, we can get flooded by peg-warmers (some of which I like) but some of the really cool stuff often get snatched up by scaplers and sold at twice to thrice the price at "hobby specialty shops." Depends on the popularity.

Space is very much an issue for me collecting wise so I purposely stay away from larger vehicles. Even with smaller vehicles I'm very picky about what I buy in consideration of "where the hell will I put it?"
So I say, buy what you dig, but be conscious of where you are going to display it.

I'd say it depends on your collecting goals.
Myself, I make low-budget displays of scenes from the cartoons and comics, so what I'll pick up for those depends a lot on what Hasbro chooses to make. I also army build COBRAs. I am old old school and think the bulk of the COBRA army should be in blue, black or red. So I've a lot of blueshirts and Vipers but not a lot of the more vividly colored COBRAs. I also make characters from my Joe-Verse, either partswaps or characters from other lines (like Elsa Schneider from IJ). I get packaged what I like the look of. I collected the 25th/Modern line because that retro packaging was irresistible. While the character art on the ROC cards is nice, I don't feel compelled to get them carded. So...my advice would be to decide on what your collecting goals are and purchase that way. What are you trying to accomplish? How do you want it to look? I'm one of those collectors who thinks his collection should be on display (though I am in the process of packing up a lot of things because I've accumulated too much stuff over the years) rather than boxed up in a closet, but diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks. |

My main focus in putting my collection back together was first to pick up everything I had as a kid. When the 25th stuff hit the reissued and resculpted figures from the 1982-1986 era took top priority. Everything else be it vintage or 25th has always been more of an after thought.
