I will start off by saying that I never owned the original Stinger as a kid. I did however, own the VAMP (same mold) and later the 25th Stinger. I have to assume the original Stinger was the same quality of hard plastic as the Vamp.
Based on all of this, I find the new Retro Stinger very disappointing. For $35, you get cheap rubbery plastic and NONE of the improvements made on the 25th/Modern Era version which retailed for under $20. While it's true that that version did not have a cool vintage box or retro figure, and that it would cost more today, I really feel this should have been used in place of what we got. The box art is also no a great print. I've seen a lot of positivity toward this release so I'm just curious if anyone agrees with me.

Hasbro's intention for this o-ring revival is to create direct copies (or close to it) of the original 1980s toys. Using the altered 25th anniversary mold for the Stinger would run counter to that.
I agree that the soft plastic is disappointing, but it's really only an issue on the doors and steering wheel - and after you put the steering wheel in place you probably won't touch it much again. And, for what it's worth, the hard plastic doors on the original were very fragile and prone to breaking. I get why Hasbro thought using softer plastic there might be a good idea, though it does leave the doors feeling flimsy. |

Throwing out pricing, the material is a bit disappointing in some ways I guess, but at least it's not brittle or greasy. I think the art is fine. The hype is justified, IMO. It's a fun toy. It could always be better, but what couldn't be?

The only thing I find disappointing is the tight fit of the figures. There's no overhead space. Every time I try to put in the driver, or any other o-ring for that matter, I have to force it through the rollbars. I have an original Stinger and I have yet to compare if it has the same issue, but I would have thought that something as basic as putting your driver in the vehicle shouldn't be a problem.
It really bothers me that this basic functionality of the toy is not taken care of. |

I?m ok with the box art but only because my vintage collection only has so few boxes so I?m very easy to please with boxes. As much as I appreciate all of the great improvements that Hasbro did with the 25th line vehicles, and as someone who owns both vintage and 25th Stinger, I am happy that Hasbro went with the older, admittedly less impressive, mold. For me this line isn?t about making it better, that was 25th, it?s about recapturing that 1984 vibe. So for me, I?m in favor of the older mold. I?ll open mine today and let you know what I think on the plastic quality.

Yeah, it wasn't a problem with the original design of the VAMP since it was roof-less. You can even see how they modified the roof's design between concept and production to increase the headroom. It's one of the reasons the 25th changes to enlarge the seating area were beneficial for o-ring figures too. It's still a pain to get figures in without removing the roof, but not as much.
