Sorry about the long thread title. And I hope the community doesn?t mind that I am seeking a little information out here. This was the first G.I. Joe forum that came up in Google and I just opened the account to maybe get some informed advice. Long story short, a cousin, who passed from Covid last year left me a few things which I am only now getting around to going through. One of the boxes contained what I guess is his old G.I. Joe figure collection. Not entirely sure why he left it to me as really the only thing we ever did together was play video games.
I?m pretty clueless as to how to proceed with these and just wanted to ask the communities opinion. My wife thinks that we should just throw it on eBay as I have absolutely no idea about G.I. Joe figures. Or give them to my nephew who is eight or nine. Which might be a pretty cool idea because I wouldn?t have to buy him a Christmas present 😂. I was a transformer dude myself so this is all Greek. But they all look in decent condition I guess. Some of them are individually, bagged, and others are grouped with the same color scheme or something. Along with all of the little plastic accessories and stuff. I took them out of the plastic crate, and shot a few pictures of them before putting them back. |

u should use https://www.yojoe.com/ to piece everything together. and look on ebay to see how much each figure is worth. because selling them indivuduarlly can make u a lot of money. but based on what I can see in the bags looks like a lot of the figures are from the 2000's which arent worth as much as the old 80's figures. I would check the yojoe page and ebay sold listings to see how much everything is worth

Some very generalized information that can help you out:
You'll notice that the figures you have there broadly fall under one of three construction styles. 1. classic O-ring - these are the style of figure produced from the 80s to 90s, though many were also made in the early 00's. They'll have a rubber band connecting the torso to the pelvis, and easily identifiable dates molded into the figure on either the back of the pelvis, or on the inner side of one thigh. The date list is often the year of release, but not always - because many figures would sometimes share parts or be re-released. Still, it's a starting point for identification. These figures largely share the same proportions and are the most common you'll see if you search "vintage O-ring G.I.Joe" Generally speaking, these are likely to be the most in demand that you have. I see some from the early 00s, but at least a couple from the 80s. 2. "new sculpt era" - these figures also have a rubber band connecting the torso to the pelvis, but they tend to have more exaggerated proportions, and the proportions are often more individually caricatured. These are the figures from various 2000's lines, such as Spy Troops and Valor vs Venom. These figures are generally in less demand than the other two types here but still have their own fans. This also appears to be the most common type of figure in your cousin's collection. 3. modern style construction - these are figure that came out next chronologically, they no longer use a rubber band to connect the torso to the hips. Instead of bending at the waist, they usually have a bend half way up the torso between the abdomen and chest. They also more often have extra added articulation, like bending ankles and swiveling or bending wrists. This figure type started with the 25th anniversary line, and continued on into the Rise of Cobra movie figures, Pursuit of Cobra line, and etc. right up until a few years ago. There don't seem to be too many of these there, but I do spot a few. The demand for these figures varies wildly. In general, if you want to sell these I recommend at the very least sorting these three types of figures and only bundling them in lots of the same figure type/era. You're more likely to get a bite this way as not everyone collects every style. Also, many G.I.Joe collectors love army building the badguys, Cobra. Which means, collecting duplicates of certain faceless trooper types. So be on the lookout for dudes wearing blue or red and wearing some sort of mask or full face covering helmet, especially if you have a bunch of them. They will usually sell regardless of the era. Prioritize identifying these figures. That being said, I think giving them to your nephew would be awesome! But, you might want to consider doing a mix. Maybe you learn how much some sell for and make some money, and then give the rest to your nephew. Your call, ultimately! yojoe.com is definitely the best website at your disposal for identifying figures and their accessories. if you check the figure section, you should find an option to sort by date, and going off the dates you can find on the figures is a great way to start. 3djoes.com is another fantastic resource, but it doesn't have as much coverage for the era most of these figures look like they're from. You should feel free to use this thread to post photos of individual figures and ask for identification if you get stuck, I think plenty of people would be happy to help.

Sorry for your lost.
Too bad you're in Texas, or else I'd be glad to come over and put them back together for you so you can sell them on eBay. Whatever is left that are incomplete then you can give to your nephew. Anyway, looks like you have a lot of Cobras and troop builders, which are always good sellers. You should make some pretty good money if you take a little time. No vehicles? |
