I'm in the opener camp myself, but I can totally see how it would kind of bother the MOC set. In truth, even as an opener, just knowing a brand like G.I. Joe was being produced by another company would bother me on some weird OCD level. While they're not going to be a retro line, I'm actually more bothered about that in the case of Hiya than I am all of the reported QC issues. I suspect I wouldn't feel that way about the other franchises I collect though, as Joe is #1 in my book.

Ancillary question, was the 25th Anniversary line considered 'retro' at it's time of release?

I can't answer for everyone, but I don't remember anyone calling it that, and I certainly didn't feel that way at the time. This was 2007, the 3.75" line had been on hiatus after a "tumultuous" time of o-ring re-releases turning into t-crotch (which caused all hell to break loose in the fandom and the hyperbole was flowing) and then o-ring returned, but with all-new sculpts that were hit or miss, to finally petering out in a "DTC" (Direct-To-Consumer) line only available through HasbroToyShop. Many of us were just thrilled GI Joe wasn't dead (and some were really pissed the o-ring was gone) and we all loved the "retro" packaging, but "Retro" really wasn't a thing then, at least not like it is now, and certainly not in toys. If anything, the figures themselves were the opposite of retro and it was a whole new era for action figures. So we just got into it, and then pissed and moaned about stuff, as usual. Retro toys or not, this fanbase never changes. lol

I think the "Retro" thing started with Star Wars, then Walmart got hit with Ninja Turtles, MOTU, Ghostbusters and Transformers about the same time, even if they didn't use that name. Now it's just kind of "code word" for all these "flashback" lines.

Not much. Though ironically what brought me back to collecting was I liked the fact that the Origins looked like the original with the many p.o.a.

I was looking at the McFarlane Super Powers stuff earlier, and something about it was just off...and I think it's that McFarlane logo more than anything else. I remember feeling the same way when Mattel released their Super Powers stuff. It made me think about how Hasbro lucked out owning the Kenner name and logo because the classic Star Wars (and Ghostbusters too) packaging wouldn't be the same without it, and that caused me to think about GI Joe's retro packaging. In addition to the obvious, I think a major reason I don't like Super7's fake-retro Joes is the packaging itself. It's like a cheap-o knock-off of GI Joe (that costs more than a real GI Joe figure...). The crap art and card design facilitates that, being so close but so far away, but it's also the missing Hasbro logo. It just doesn't feel or look right. Imagine a real classic GI Joe carded figure with the Mattel logo on it...
So, how important is stuff like that to you? |

I think it actually started with the mego style cloth figures. Doesn't matter though. It's EVERYWHERE now!

What if MOTU Origins had a Jazwares or Jakks Pacific logo on the cards instead of the familiar Mattel red sun (or whatever that is)?

I'll spare you any long winded, politically charged nonsense, but yeah, I agree wholeheartedly, and I'm certainly not what one would call patriotic.
