Groceries and toilet paper selling more than toys does not mean there has been a change in purchasing from toys to groceries and toilet paper; groceries and toilet paper always sell more than toys. People no longer buying t-shirts because they aren?t working from home anymore and are now buying more office related apparel, but Target has stocked up on t-shirts and sweatpants, is a change in shopping behaviors that leaves Target with an inventory glut of t-shirts and sweatpants that requires a change in spending to more office related apparel. But they aren’t eliminating the clothing departments just because they have a glut of t-shirts that aren’t selling anymore compared to the amount of inventory they had planned for. I wonder how much of this is a result of the surge of Black Friday product they received well after Christmas, that's still clogging endcaps.

Since we have this thread, I'll repost this here:
The Target article there makes me wonder - Emily said stores will put out the stuff when they do. The article says stores are looking at keeping merchandise away for instance for the holidays. Wonder if that's why Walmart's Retro and Croc Master tags disappeared, why Marvel Legends are disappearing from Target, and why Hasbro has no idea when the stuff they shipped will be put out? |

Do you think toys are ever in demand like groceries? I assure you, if it was simply a comparison of comparative performance of departments there wouldn?t even be a toy department in Target. Again, the fear was whether they would pull action figures from the shelves which is not what Target is doing and not even remotely what the article stated. They aren?t eliminating any department, they are simply making sure they invest in more in demand items. There have been multiple articles on this written over the weekend, not just this one.

But they aren?t eliminating the clothing departments just because they have a glut of t-shirts that aren?t selling anymore compared to the amount of inventory they had planned for. And that Target may be leaving the toys in the back for a later date to put out, ie when the Christmas season starts, especially with the supply chain still fucked up and a possible recession looming. So buying stock now while it's cheaper then putting it out later makes financial sense. Which tracks with Emily's response of it being up to the retailers when to put out stuff. Don't forget - one of the things that many sites said was that toys were a big item selling during the pandemic. Especially true when we were getting hundreds of extra dollars from the government. Every time we got a stimulus check I'll be damned if the Nike store downtown didn't have a line around the block, for example. So toys may fall under those "pandemic items" that they are carrying less of. |

I think the poster's point was that Target may be ordering less toys and more groceries, baby formula, etc. instead of stuff like toys.

So toys may fall under those "pandemic items" that they are carrying less of. And toy sales increasing during the pandemic doesn?t, in any way, qualify toys as a pandemic item; Target?s toy department has not changed in any meaningful way based on the pandemic. And that is not what Emily said in regards to Hasbro shipping. She stated explicitly that Hasbro isn?t shipping new items to retailers until they can ship all retailers at the same time. The lack of new product showing up at retail, as a whole, indicates Hasbro hasn?t shipped them, not that the retailers aren?t putting them out. Her comment about retailers responsibility to put them out is only in regards to once they have them in their possession, something that is so blatantly obvious it shouldn?t even need to be discussed. Nobody has a gun to Target?s head forcing them to put inventory out. |

None. The article states explicitly it?s a result of misforecasting sales trends as the shopping trends have shifted, resulting in slower sales and increased inventory of items, like casual wear and TV?s, that were selling rapidly but have now stalled.

Depends on the barometer. More often then not, big corporations misinterpret data based solely on "what sells and what doesn't." Sure it paints a very black and white picture, but there's no causation included in the result which is how, more often than not, they miss the boat entirely on trends and are forced to play "catch-up" vs. setting them.

just chiming in, if you have a wife, girlfriend or daughter there's a shortage of feminine products going on. i waited a little too long yesterday to hit walmart during lunch to stock up after finding this out and the box my wife gets was all but wiped out (all that was left between two walmarts were open boxes of her box). other kinds totally gone. i got what i could which were the open boxes after counting them.
i've bought them the last few times for her so seeing totally empty sections where product goes here is something to be alarmed about. im so glad i dont have a baby right now with the formula shortage going on. as for toys, we're going on 2 years with shelves being empty with something finally to blame; and it was on the pandemic. 6 years total worth of struggling toy shelves from what i can tell in my own experience hitting walmarts 3 times a week. target getting rid of marvel legends doesnt seem right. time to adult. get your toys when you can, but there are bigger priorities that stores are always going to have. |

Sounds like people hoarding feminine hygiene products. What's next - toilet paper hoarding AGAIN?

The feminine product shortage is probably from women using it to stop the bleeding out of husbands that hurt themselves over gas prices.
