When the Classified Series debuted it was undeniably a kid focused line with the garish colors, the Nerf blasters, and the Fortnite aesthetic to the character designs. However, we bitched (like a muthafucka,) and 27 months (and a course correction later,) we have a Classified Series that looks vastly different than the Wave 1 figures and characters that were featured in the Operation Blackout video game. So my question is this (along with being twofold,) Who is the target demo for G.I. Classified Series is kids or is it the adult collector? If you say the adult collector please state why you think Classified being collector focused is good or bad for the brand.
My guess is that if you asked and pressed the JOE team for an answer they would tell you that officially the G.I. JOE Classified Series is a boy's action figure line, but it is heavily influenced by the adult collector and Emily even said as much (I think in the last live stream, [if you guys REALLY want me to go find the exact video I'll do it.]) Anyway, Emily says that the team considers whether or not we'll like a potential character, (which is good and bad and is an argument for another day,) My feelings on this twofold. The JOE fanboy in me thinks great that the Classified Series is leans towards the adult collector, however the pragmatist in me knows that Classified leaning towards the adult collector does little to nothing to grow the brand and develop a new generation of fans to G.I. JOE.

Since it's in the boys aisle, I'd say it's aimed at boys. Otherwise, it'd be in the adult collectors aisle.

I personally feel that it started as an attempt to bring in that elusive new generation, but the course correction was in and of itself a switch in focus. I'd also argue that this was always the case for each revival of Joe, the difference here being the fact that this team wised up to the actual demographic that's buying them before it was too late. I'd say that the reason it's in the toy aisle is that it started there.

You brought up a very interesting point and I'm off topic. Suppose the back in the 90's the JOE team at that time course corrected and resigned the Extreme line with multiple p.o.a. would that have saved that line? Or re-designing the Extreme line wasn't feasible due to tooling costs and just like Blaine Edwards and Antonio Merriweather, the fandom "Hated," G.I. JOE Extreme.

I think they were aimed at both, in the beginning, but Hasbro sees who their target audience is now and so they are accounting for that.

Is that good or bad in your opinion?

Extreme was aimed at kids, and faced the same problem ARAH had - competition from Power Rangers and Marvel/DC Superheroes. It didn't help that the cartoon was awful. |

I tend to assume guys like us are the target audience, but I have given a couple to my nephew, who claims to like them (his father has him growing up playing with his old o-rings).
I am off to give said nephew the trade paperback of the first comics. I feel like I am doing my part today. |

All of these $20+ action figure lines are aimed at adults, whether they have Nerf guns or not. In fact, almost all toys of this type are made for collectors now, unless they are just exceptionally cheap.
I will give you a case in point. My family recently got stuck indoors because of COVID and my four-year old daughter burned through some of the TV we let her watch, so on a lark we watched a He-Man episode. She liked it and so I bought a bunch of Origins toys that were heavily discounted on eBay and Amazon. I figured these figures, at least, were meant to be played with. Ha! They are just as fragile as Classified, Legends, and Black Series. The paint scuffs from even the most minor wear and tear. The joints get loose super fast. Some of them even come with stands, for goodness sake. They simply aren't made for 80s-style play. The people designing and pushing action figure lines know they are meant for adults. Even if the bigger corporate people get them into toy aisles with the promise of impulse kid buying, that simply isn't want is sustaining these 80s-era lines (like He-Man, G.I. Joe, Transformers, and Turtles).

This might be somewhat tangential to the OP's question, but is there any solid reason why we think the ARAH-themed stuff wouldn't appeal to kids?
