Generally speaking almost all of Hasbro's collector-oriented 6" lines eventually raise in value. Not every figure, of course, and not until they're well and truly sold out and out of circulation for a few years. Even figures that are reissued many times or in many forms can retain value in some cases.
Even figures that pegwarmed like crazy when they were on shelves can sometimes end up fetching more than double their retail price...loose/complete/good condition. It's not a quick turn around. Think closer to 3 years to as far out as ten years or more. I'm not really an "investor" type of collector but I'll just say that as I've pared my collections down in recent years I've been gobsmacked at what a lot of toys go for. Not everything will be a winner, of course, but a lot of them will, and overall you'd probably come out ahead or at least break even (and again, I'm talking loose/complete here, not MIB and especially not graded). Ironically though, what may ultimately end up being the rarest of Classified figures may be the First edition, first wave "Gold Shin" figures as those are unlikely to be re-released. Though the "field repaint" variants may also be relatively scarce in the long run as well (Shades of Swivel-Arm O13 figures!), but we'll see. Last edited by Jmacq1; 03-02-2022 at 10:23 PM.. |

This is an interesting question. When I was collecting MOTUC, I started late. People told me that once the line was finished all of the figures would crash in value and it would be easy to catch up. I didn't believe them so I grabbed as much as I could, paying between retail or a bit above for everyone except Shadow Weaver and Whiplash.
Well, MOTUC has ended and the figures' value has skyrocketed. You would have to spend a fortune for these figures, even the Super7 ones. So, yes, I think Classified will increase in value at some point. Maybe not like O-ring originals, but certainly in line with something like MOTUC. Tip for anyone looking to make toy investing a serious business: limited production. If there is even an inkling that they'll make it again (slight redeco or outright re-release), it won't significantly appreciate. Scarcity is the only true source of value. Every piece I have that has notably appreciated in price was part of a one-time preorder, KickStarter, or limited run. Ongoing lines such as Classified has zero value predictability. Exclusives or popular niche characters are a slight indicator, but exclusives have already proven unreliable with re-releases and redecos. If you buy into this line, do it because you want the toys for yourself or have unbelievable luck. Quick reminder: nothing "retains" its value unless it appreciates. If you hold something for five years and you sell it for the same price, you've lost real dollars and inventory space by holding it. Last edited by Junkyard84; 03-02-2022 at 10:17 PM.. |

This never made sense to me at all. I guess if He-Man suddenly lost all popularity then maybe no one would buy the figures if the line was over. But it seemed to me so few of these were made that the value wasn't likely to crash. MOTUC did go through periods where prices fell. That's how I got a lot of figures for basically retail (including some harder to find ones at the time like Beast Man, Mer-Man, Trap Jaw). The prices for some figures dropped a lot when suddenly huge quantities of figures showed up at the Mattel regular store (and not MattyCollector) for $20 each (with big discount coupons). But it didn't take long for them to recover and then when Super7 lost the license, it just seemed the values exploded.
