i love to army build especially the old vintage figures. but now that the prices are to high I will wait for the new o-ring figures to be released. but I like the way they look in large numbers.. if they come out with 1986 Vipers and BATS I dont think Ill be able to refrain from buying a minimum of 50 each haha.

I do it to represent the multitudes of nameless, faceless, soldiers Cobra has. I only do it for Cobra. Since GI JOE is supposed to be the equivalent of a "Tier 1" special ops unit in real life I never liked the idea of "green shirts". There is the regular big Army for that, the Navy, the USMC but I don't represent conventional military in my collecting.
That being said I only strive for maybe four of a troop I like. The current state of Classified in finding say, the Viper makes it not possible. I say that having a degree of disposable income to collect, but at a certain point principle takes over with a scalper price. I saw some nice minor customizations in the Classified picture thread that I want to do with my Cobra troops but overall, they will be uniform. Last edited by CG Steve; 01-16-2022 at 12:51 PM.. |

Troop building for me goes back to my dad and his toy soldier collecting. Can't just have one infantry type. Just doesn't look right to me, anyway. And as for the US military not looking the same, I've got one story for you. When my son graduated from Basic training, they had the family go into the ranks to find our soldier. Outside of hight and race, we parents had a hard time. The point is,the Army tries hard for the soldiers to look alike. It helps hide numbers and skills and rank.

I regret army building Classified figures, but you can't possibly have enough troops to fill the pegs on vehicles. You always need more bodies to fill those pegs.

I have several of each of the Cobra troops. I do dios, and wants to have multiple of all the troops. As a kid playing with the Joes, it always sucked that there were so many Joes and not that many Cobras. Now that I'm older and have the money I buy multiple of all the army builders. I open them all and enjoy them all!

In the VvV line I tried to build groups of like figures without buying the exact figures, I'd buy various CG packs like the Crimson Sabotage, the twins packs from TRU, the Crimson Night figures, the CG helicopter.

I would love to army build, but I'm already buying too many different lines and spending a lot of money and simply can't justify it, unless there are paint schemes I can't get otherwise (like Python Patrol and the Viper Officer from the 3-pack). However, I will get two Crimson Guards because they look so good and I need them flanking my CC on his throne.
Hoping they'll release an Alley Viper 3-pack, with the darker Alley Viper variant as the officer and a BAT 3-pack, with Overkill as the officer. |

I'd say with Classified what I do could charitably be called Squad building, but probably not Army building. Generally it's 2 of any given troop plus an "officer" if available. For "staple" troops (Cobra trooper/infantry, Vipers, maybe BATs) or personal favorites (Alley Vipers) I might push it to 4 and an officer. But space concerns just don't make for easy 6 inch figure Army building.
As for the reasons: A combination of the "something I wanted to do as a kid" coupled with feeling like the Joes should be perpetually outnumbered since that's part of the heroic fantasy aspects of the franchise. Last edited by Jmacq1; 03-03-2022 at 08:19 AM.. |

When I got back into ARAH I did army build Cobra to an extent. Most of my army building was done with with the o-ring figures released during the 2000-2005 run. I also have built up a large hiss tank collection. I just like the way cobra troopers and Hiss Tanks look lined up together. As far as the ARAH vintage run - I really only did army building with Snow Serpent v2 as I had planned a winter diorama but never got around to it.
In my future collecting I won't be army building - I'll probably get two of everything in the o-ring line but that is it. I am guilty of buying 2-3 of the same figure as well but that's just so I have intact parts. There are a few Joes I have compulsively bought - Hit and Run (I think I have 6 or 7), BeachHead v1 (5), FootLoose (5). I forgot---I have a shitload of Strato Vipers and Motor Vipers because I love them and they are my de facto pilots and drivers for most of my cobra vehicles and aircraft.
