Alley Viper came out during 'the lost years' for me. The years where I was 'too old' to play with GIJoe any more - but 'too young' to have the confidence to simply be a collector. I have zero sentimental attachment to him.
He's NEON ORANGE and LIGHT BLUE. Don't people consider the bright colors as the downfall of the original line? How is he supposed to be an urban trooper with those colors? Can someone explain why he is so loved? |

Alley Viper was from 89'. Close, but still a couple years away from the more despised design years.. And his colors might be bright but they aren't neon. Design is cool, and while the colors might not be to everyone's liking, I've always had an appeal towards that color combination.

Ditto. I never had or knew about him until I was an adult.
That said, I think he's cool and one of the few "lost years" figures I'm interested in. |

Count me as one of those who do not understand the appeal. I'm not a fan of V1 Alley Viper, AT ALL. I DO think they did a good job on the new classified figure, in terms of it being true to the original, and look forward to a repaint, though. To each his own.

I don’t consider Alley Viper as part of the “neon” crowd, because even though he’s covered in bright saturated colors, the colors are not “neon” and don’t feel like the later 90s Joes. I think if you do a side by side comparison, this will become evident. The color combination of saturated orange, blue and his black accessories feel well balanced and intentional to me, where as a lot of the “neon” Joes, where not only much of the figures were neon, but so were the weapons, felt somewhat visually unbalanced, and unintentional… cause the neon color didn’t transcend the color of the plastic into some kind of uniform like the Alley Vipers did, it just looked like colorful plastic.
Yeah, not the most stealthy for urban combat, but that never bothered me as a kid, nor as an adult. I’m sure part of why I like him is cause of nostalgia, but I do find him to be a visually well balanced figure with an attractive color scheme that pops, and figures with movable face shields and helmets are always a win in my book. |

I personally think they should’ve gone for the poc look. But whatever
Maybe they’re so badass they don’t give a shit about having loud ass colors?....

I'll give my 1 cent.
1) The time period. He was one of early ones with bright color, before GIJoe becomes full blown neon, which was the downfall as you mentioned. But being one of the first figures with bright color, it was not tiresome at that point in time. 2) He's Cobra. Cobra figures have always enjoyed more leeway in terms of color choices. Had Shockwave came out in orange and blue, I don't think that would have worked. Joes figures have always stayed close to their "real world" camo look, except for specialized troops like Sci-Fi, Lifeline and Airtight etc. which denote their specialty field. Cobra have always embraced brighter colors. Once again, this is before everyone started wearing neon. 3) It's the "Stormtrooper Effect". The way they explain the choice of white for Storm Troopers is that they instill fear in those they approach. They want to be seen...and feared. I see Alley Vipers having that attitude. "Come at me bro! I'm so decked out in thick armor, attack me and die!" 4) It's the shield. Come on, that's a cool shield. That's my own personal opinion anyway! I never got it either. I understand at that point that the toyline had weird snake aliens and robot troopers and stuff, so it was full on fantasy by that point, but still....it's BRIGHT ASS ORANGE.
I did really like the second (or third?) one that was black and yellow and had a cat face mask. Still absurd colors, but just a fun toy. There's nothing wrong with liking this figure but just accept the fact that it's from a crazy sci-fi fantasy toyline and in no way does it represent reality. You can try to justify it in your head if you must, but it's still gonna sound insane. "Oh they wanna intimidate people so they show up to sneak attack in BLINDING BRIGHT ORANGE ARMOR." "Sarge I can't get a bead on this guy...I just can't find his BRIGHT ORANGE ARMOR in my scope!" Easy pass for me. More for the rest of you to army build. Now Night Viper I can get into though, cause he's just green, like most military uniforms. |

Theres just something classic about the Alley Viper, it pulls me back to my youth. And those crazy days of neon colors every where and on everything. I hate neon now lol. But still I love the old Alley Viper, but really probably has more to do with I remember my Grand Ma getting it for me at K-Mart and the Fang II.
But hopefully they will repaint them in many various schemes, POC is one of my favorites. But I really loved the 97 and 2004 Urban Strike Team variants. |

I admit.. I like the 90s Joes. So take this as you will.
But he looks awesome, and sinister. Alley Viper always read as urban ops, to me, and the colors hardly matter at that point. The series always felt so outlandish anyways, with ninjas & bikers & whatnot that I didn't think twice about them. |
