I think that Storm Shadow yellowing is part of one of the major reasons some of us are really happy to see O-Rings again. I've said it before, but it bears repeating, the original O-Ring figures aren't getting any newer. Just try try posing or playing with an 82 figure and there's a good chance they'll break. It's great to get repros while the originals are still around to use as a pattern.
The advantage of O-rings to some of us is a bit more than just nostalgia, though. Some of us actually prefer the aesthetic of the older style. I own quite a few ME figures, but a lot of them have some weird gaps or quirks, like the back of the head sharply cutting of above the ball joint on figures like Duke or Stalker, or some of the torsos not quite wanting to stand up straight giving the figure an odd hunch. It makes some of them look a bit gangly or inhuman. I get why some folks prefer ME, but there are some advantages to the O-Ring style. This exactly. Especially for those of us who are younger and only ever got loose ARAH figures at garage sales growing up, or for those who have kids who like the old figures, repros of the originals are just perfect. |

Agreed on all points. I'd like to have figures I feel comfortable letting my nephews play with, and I also prefer the proportions and aesthetic of the vintage o-rings... I could never get past the proportions and chest cuts of the ME figures, so it's not just nostalgia... but some people like it, so it's all good.

Reading the above posts solidified my dream ideal GI Joe lines in the "heritage scale" as the Star Wars team likes to put it.
The first is already coming: pure nostalgic o-rings that are truly retro i.e. the Retro Collection. The second would be 4" versions that look very similar to Super7's Ultimates figures. Super-articulated 4" figures that near perfectly match their media sources i.e. Sunbow, the comics, Renegades, Resolute, movies, and whatever else may be coming. This would be GI Joe: The Vintage Collection and universal packaging would include a screenshot from the media source. The Star Wars team already did the dirty work and figured out how to make two heritage scale lines thrive simultaneously. GI Joe took the first step toward that by rebranding Retro as classic o-ring figures. But there's a lot of marketing and work to do in order for two Joe heritage scale lines to be viable. |

Yes I did, I'm trying to imagine what I'd like to see in a modernized O-Ring, more or less.

I often reference the 2002 Snake Eyes too. The arms suck, but he was given hinged ankles and swivel wrists added to the ARAH articulation, which I feel is the max POA you really need.

I with you. I'd even remove the hinged ankles. Swivel wrists are useful for properly positioning the gun.

I would prefer Hasbro to keep the original aesthetic/sculpts, because they just fit that era. It always feels a bit weird to me when You have a highly detailed ME style face sculpt with o-ring construction, because it feels like trying to force 2 eras together that don't really fit. My belief is the era/style of sculpt should match the era of the construction, so modernized sculpts look good with ME construction, where as vintage style sculpts look good with vintage construction, which is why Wayne Ruthel and those new deck crew figures look so good to me, and fit seamlessly with other vintage figures. Mixing eras of sculpts and construction always kind of feels like plastic surgery gone wrong... Those are just my personal feelings.
I like the chunkier, sturdier builds of the O-Ring style, the more toy-like quality of them. Compared with Modern Era. What I don't think is necessary at all at this scale are a rocker or ankle swivel, double-hinge knees, or that chest swivel. That 2002 Snake Eyes feels very poseable and moveable, without verging into floppy noodle territory.
