How great is it to see GIJoe return to being the King of the Mountain of Action Figures?
I was thinking - in the late 70's / early 80's Star Wars Action Figures blew up the market. But then, in 1982, GIJoe came along and took the 3 3/4" concept and made it better. Better than anyone before - and unmatched since. Nowadays, 6" figures have dominated the market. Star Wars, Marvel, McFarlane have all fought for the top spot. But with the resurgence of GIJoe in 6" format - the proper champion has regained their former glory. 6" GIJoe Classified is far and above the competition. Sculpting, Construction, Quality. They just FEEL like a million bucks. Sometimes I wonder how awesome it would be to have a Mandalorian done in the Classified format - with the quality, detail and feel. I used to dream about the same things in the 80's - wondering how cool it would be to have a Luke Skywalker done at the same level of detail and articulation as GIJoe's Shipwreck or Crimson Guard. Just feels good to have come full circle. |

Wise words. I was born in the late 70's so the first 3-4 years of ARAH hit me in THE sweet spot. Star Wars were fine, but like you said, GIJoe was a marked improvement and never improved upon by anyone else. When I started a family and got a collecting itch back in 2000-ish, I found a lot of DC Direct stuff that hit me in the same gland as my Joes did, and I always wondered why there weren't any GIJoe products in the same scale. I stopped grabbing DC Figs when DC Direct started using cheaper plastics, and completely stopped soon after.
Then I saw the solicitations for the 00 Classified Snake-Eyes deluxe figure, and it all flooded back. I've essentially purchased every single available Classified figure (except the dreadful Snake-eyes movie Tie-ins) and I'm missing like 4 in total. At the time of the Target Cobra island releases, living in Canada meant "Too bad, so sad" but my dad living in Florida at the time caught wind and just like he did when I was a kid, drove all over Florida on his motorcycle trying to get me Firefly and the Cobra Trooper. He found none. And then he passed away shortly afterward. Another good GIJoe memory brought to me by my Dad (regardless of the end result), but 40 years later. It is indeed great seeing Duke and the lads atop the mountain once more. |

That's a VERY selective definition of "top of the mountain". A single $25 assortment of 6" figures, a single deluxe item, and MAYBE a handful of exclusives? Not exactly "dominating" the aisle compared to lines like Transformers or Star Wars or even Spider-Man (ignoring the wider Marvel properties for the moment).
GI Joe has LONG been a superior product, going back to the turn of the decade. But that hasn't been crap to the actual success of the brand. And while the current success is nice...GI Joe is still VERY much stuck in a "legacy brand" mode without anything on the horizon to grow the property outside that. The brands that have the biggest presence in the toy aisle are those that are hitting multiple demographics. For all the bull that Hasbro keeps espousing about how things like Transformers Legacy or Classified are "for kids", the price point keeps it out of being a readily accessible product outside of adults. ALL of the other brands leverage multiple interpretations and product styles to hit multiple markets. Transformers had Cyberverse (its replacement, Earthspark is in the wings), Star Wars has Mission Series, and even Marvel has lower cost, kid-centric, stuff like their "basic" figures. Most of them tied into major media pushes. Even Masters of the Universe seemed to come back out of nowhere to garner more relevance than GI Joe at the moment. Launching with a modernization of the retro figures, Mattel immediately moved onto Revelations and then the kid-centric Netflix series and launched additional product lines. GI Joe still has a long way to go before being talked in the same breath as those other brands right now. Hasbro has built a solid foundation...but there's still a lot of work to do. Especially with the Snake Eyes movie being a complete non-entity to the brand (aside from clogging some of our retail venues with Akikos and Storm Shadows nobody seems to want).

According to Hasbro's report with the Securities and Exchange Commission for the quarterly period ending June 26, 2022, G.I. Joe is neither a Franchise Brand nor a Partner Brand, but is called an Emerging Brand, as mentioned in this paragraph:
EMERGING BRANDS: Net revenues from the Emerging Brands portfolio increased 3% during the second quarter of 2022 compared to the second quarter of 2021. Net revenue increases during the second quarter of 2022 were driven by POWER RANGERS and FURREAL FRIENDS products, partially offset by lower net revenues from GI JOE and certain other EMERGING BRANDS products. https://investor.hasbro.com/node/34926/html

Hasbro basically lumps any new or "secondary tier" franchises as "Emerging Brands", brands that haven't quite reached the cultural and sales impact to be considered as vital as the Franchise brands (which composes stuff like Nerf, Magic The Gathering, Monopoly and Transformers). Power Rangers is on the cusp of being a Franchise brand, but GI Joe is, seemingly, just treading water for the moment. "Partner Brands" are anything licensed from someone else.

The only thing G.I. Joe needs to be the best 6" figure on the market, in my eyes, is include more paint apps, especially on their weapons. At the moment, their price, sculpts, accessories, articulation, and pre-plastic-free packaging are as good, if not better, than any other 1/12 scale figure line.
