The retro Destro that was just released got me thinking. Its cartoon inspired, with the metallic hands and grey boots. The 50th is 1983 figure inspired with the black hands and black boots. The comic colors are somewhere in between with metallic hands and black boots and would just need a lower leg swap between the two to work (50th legs retro body) Has anyone ever come up with a list of what figures fall into what category (cartoon, comic, or toy)? It would be a great reference, and if it doesn't exist we should make one. It would help identify what figures should be in what display. For instance the Retro cobra commander is toy inspired with the short gloves, and would therefore not be correct in a mass device display from the cartoon. The ultimate cobra commander with the long gloves would be a better choice. With so many versions of each popular character that have been released, it would really narrow down which ones to pick up, and which ones to pass on.

This is kind of what I have in mind as far as a list by media the figure appears in.

Yeah its interesting.
I remember The 25th line used to do that "as seen in the cartoon" or "as seen in the comic book"caption on the upper right hand corner of the front card. Plus the DVD and Comic Packs. Then they had figures made just to represent the card art or the actual figure of the vintage line. Later they pretty much did away with all of that, so we got a kinda free for all with what came later on in the various assortments to the present. Last edited by CG82; 08-31-2021 at 03:39 AM.. |

It gets even more confusing with the DVD pack Dusty. The cartoon Dusty had green camo over tan while the toy release both vintage and DVD pack have brown on tan. So even with a DVD pack, it may not necessarily be cartoon inspired. I will say I like it much better when they draw from a source for existing character releases instead of just making up a version.

I wish I could remember the episode, but there's one cartoon where there's a nice flaw in the animation: Ripper has Destro's forearms, complete with hand grenades. I think they're in outer space.

Sideshow's figures also influenced the line with design and details going as far back the 25th launch. Even that Devil's Due comic character designs has some influence as well. The line was always interesting as to where it got its inspiration from.
