I threw the couple of them I had together with the Cyber Ninjas and Data Vipers and had them as a special group of troopers that were basically Firefly's personal squad.

The Cobra's in ROC wore pretty fearsome and protective battle armor reminisce of Army of One. Plus they were super soldiers. While the Retaliation Cobra's wore mdern generic combat fatigues with those special forces looking bicycle helmets with added cheek guards of a sparring boxer . I don't remember them even having body armor that actually protected them in the movie. They were sadly a major downgrade from the previous film like no money was spent of their costumes. The ROC Vipers also had even had futuristic weapons that packed a mean punch.

Your kidding right? The Retaliation Cobra dudes are 10x better than than the roc guys. The roc guys looked like the aliens from independence day had a affair with a human female and that was the result.

I’m glad you like them bud - you might be the first I’ve heard who really championed them. |

Call it what you will, but I didnt think they were that bad looking in the movie. The Hydra Troopers that appeared a few years later with similar weapons and some with the bulky heavier body armor had a similar theme. I think even the Professor Moriarty soldiers from The League of Extraordinary Gentleman in 2003 also had a similarity to the Cobra ROC Vipers and Hydra troopers that came years later. It wasnt really a big deal to me. I think for the movie they weren't even supposed to be Cobra troopers anyway but a special kinda Viper or proto Viper classes in the film.
Now, the figures werent the greatest sculpted or that faithfully translated to plastic. I think much of the issues with them had more to do with the action figures. Even the Cobra Eels in the film were pretty cool looking. The Mars Troopers in the ROC video game actually appeared to be updated Cobra soldiers/troopers but they were never in the movie sadly. The Hasbro figure on the other pretty much sucked, but the helmet was OK. Many of the designs and characters for the ROC toyline(along with repainted 25th characters/figures with some Resolute thrown in) actually appeared to be taken from the EA video game that actually had good concept art while the game was mediocre at best. The Cobra Combat Ninja toy seems to be a Hasbro composite of the concept art from the Cobra special forces soldier. The movie sadly did not want to spend too much money on their costumes apparently,so we got what we got on film. Last edited by CG82; 08-25-2021 at 04:52 PM.. |

Well generally body armor isn't necessarily big and bulky anymore. Others the point of a plate carrier, which the Retaliation troopers all wear. It protects the most vital parts, which is your torso, but keeping you lighter, agile, and mobile than heavier armor does. While I don't expect everyone to geek out about gear like I do but the Crye Combat Uniform is actually pretty badass. |

The Viper Commando's desert attack and Neo-Viper attack on the Pit they did not "die that fast as everyone else". They were pretty hard to kill, where the armor did serve its purpose .
Usually they got killed by Snake-Eye's sword or his well placed shots between the hard plates or the lenses or neck area. Most times they got shot or stabbed in the eyes . Later on Duke was shooting captured Mars laser pistols at them. Heavy Duty fired 20mm grenades at them in the Pit, some got back up, and Scarlett was later using more powerful explosive ammo crossbow shots of some kind which seemed an improvement over the ones she used at desert ambush rescue. In any event the armor in the movie showed their advanced composite body armor resisting most ammunition. The Vipers themselves had their minds altered to change them into warriors incapable of fear or pain. Quite a few them kept getting back up off the ground. Their enhanced physical abilities made the inhumanly strong, fast and deadly. |

I always thought the roc vipers looked like a live action frag viper wearing armor. All they need is a hose going from the helmet to a backpack and a grenade jihali thrower. The roc Cobras did have a good theme throughout. By that I mean if you have a roc eel, ice viper, neo viper, viper commando, and so on, they all look like they belong to the same orgination and go together. The Retaliation trooper is pretty generic and would look just as at home in the remake of Red dawn as in Gi joe. Nothing about the design really screams Cobra to me.

Yeah, there is a certain similarity to the Frag Vipers and I think the Headhunter Stormtroopers. I think some of the pre-production helmets had a more snake-human hybrid looking skull motif that was not used. The film went with a the more robot and iron skull effect in the film which seemed to be the pedigree cause of the man in the iron mask surrounding the Destro family(also seen in sunbow) and Cobra forming from out've Mars industries.
The Retaliation figure is nice on its own, since its basically a repainted Shock Trooper but now with a special forces helmet and ninja background, lol. The Retaliation troopers werent that inspired in the film at all. And with somehow Cobra re-imagined in the film as being a US public relations and state sanctioned rival and replacement to GI JOE special forces was pretty stupid. In the movie, they wore navy inspired digital blue camo as opposed to red woodland style camo of the bit cooler looking Shadowloo Bison Troopers from the original Street Fighter film whom seem to be the main inspiration I guess. And the Cobra's were also wearing oddly much less protective head and face helmets as opposed to the Bison troops . Interestingly the Shadoloo Troopers and Hasbro and EA ROC video game Cobra/Mars Troopers seemed to be wearing pretty similar helmets. Last edited by CG82; 08-29-2021 at 11:48 AM.. |

They're the Blue Ninjas from the comics, hence the robot head. These ones are now official Cobras.
