I sooooo want one to go alongside Bellomo’s 82-94! I don’t care that it would make my soft cover versions redundant.
Same goes for Carson’s upcoming art HC compilation…

Maybe it's because I'm pre-judging it based on the Accessories appendix at the back of the R.A.H.C. Guide, which I thought could have been done much better. Sure, the photography is great for matching the re-used accessories, especially those injected in new colors, but once successfully identified, there exists no index to determine which figures or vehicles used that particular accessory. It's so very frustrating without one! The index which I do expect that we'll see, much like the one already at the back of the R.A.H.C. Guide, is one that will tell us on which page and volume of Rank & File a particular Code Named Character appears. That will be helpful, but we really need a better way to match the accessories to the figures, other than just a part number next to a photograph.

Although I'm certain to purchase a copy, Rank & File volume 6 is the book which I'm least looking forward to in this Rank & File series.

Thanks a ton Playful for making an announcement post here and including links. I've been nose to the grindstone for the last few years working on this volume and haven't gotten to the forums like I used to. But HISSTank.com has always been proudly represented in each guidebook.
Volume 6 is indeed the accessory guide and it will be similar to the R.A.H.C Guide's accessory appendix. Volume 6 will also include the index for all five volumes. Including a reverse accessory index listing the accessory number and the action figures associated with is typically the one comment R.A.H.C. Guide fans voice. However, to be honest, the demand has never been as high as getting the Rank & File guidebook series to completion and limited by this army of one. I have taken my accessories spreadsheet I used to create the R.A.H.C. Guide appendix and put it into a page layout but the work needs some refinement. To give some technical behind the scenes insight, perfect bound press run books like the R.A.H.C. Guide are the most cost efficient at multiples of 16 pages. If you look at a Bellomo Ultimate Guide, that is the reason why he doesn't have appendices. The layout I mentioned above is currently at fourteen pages but my $40 price point was already at a 2011 crossroads for your average G.I. Joe action figure guidebook consumer. I personally wanted the accessories numbered and I wanted the appendix, I had to draw a line somewhere. To the relevancy of the fourteen pages, I need multiples of four pages for my stitch bound "Rank & File" styled guidebooks. Filling two pages isn't too hard and I actually have that mock-up fleshed out at twenty pages total (I included quarter panel thumbnails of the R.A.H.C. Guide accessories appendix). The pages are black and white to make it cost effective, except for the thumbnails, and I haven't had it priced out because, again, the demand was minimal. As far as a Rank & File stitch bound book, I have a (currently) thirty-four page volume six mock-up that covers every accessory up to 2014—so count on at least six to ten more pages of 2015-2018 accessories filtered into the existing layout. On the other side of that of those numbers, I am limited to the fifty-two pages before I have to look at other, more costly, binding options. So again, the 4" reverse accessory listing (which would probably be a lot more than fourteen pages) would simply not fit with my limitations. These constraints do leave me two "halves" of a book that I could produce a reversed accessory index for the R.A.H.C. Guide and the subsequent Rank & File Guidebook series. That would certainly be the priority once volume 6 is completed. So there you go, you're all caught up on where I'm coming from so I'll quit blathering on. I haven't been on HISSTank in a while, so I wanted to make up for lack of posting (or at least I'm telling myself that). If you have any other concerns, suggestions, or critiques, now is the time to make them known because inserting an accessory into the similar style layout as the R.A.H.C. Guide's accessory appendix is anything but like a text document's reflow. I really wish it was. |

Here is a HISSTank exclusive, a sample of the reversed accessory spread I mentioned above. Again, it would need to be reviewed and finalized but this is where I left off. I went black and white because the information is more technical than visual and I wanted to make it cost effective for collectors. Thoughts are welcome.
Oh, and as Ozzie92 has been gracious enough to cover my updates when I'm not around, if you want a hardbound or reprint of the R.A.H.C. Guide, make your voice known. I will gladly update and print these guidebooks if the demand is there. And again, thanks to all who have ordered volume 5! It's been a whirlwind week and a half since orders went live but great to see everyone excited!! |

Has anyone received their copy of volume 5 yet? Mine left Philly on July 12th and has been in delivery limbo since.

It sounds as if the USPS lost your book. You might have to begin a claim.

I contacted James to make sure it wasn't returned to him. He responded right away and relayed the same info. I submitted a claim to USPS and one day later it shows movement on tracking. It's currently at my local PO, should be delivered today or Monday.
