With the fact that the team is so rag tag looking as it is, they never struck me as a specific military unit. I always treated them as kind of a separate unit still under the influence if the DoD, but not US military per say.
But personally I could care less who Hasbro says they are a part of. We have 40 years of lore to fall back on to create our own little joe verses, and while I prefer the US part of it. It does not bother me too much if it is going away. Just don't go woke and continue making figures. |

So, are they PMC's, or like the A-Team? Can't have a paramilitary group running around the world unchecked.

There’s a lot of reasons, I think. Most of them are not appropriate to mention here.
But, I think chief among them, the 80s was a special moment in American history in which cheering for the home team wasn’t considered the bad manners that it is today. When the movie “Top Gun” hit the theaters in 1986, Navy recruitment skyrocketed; I doubt very seriously the new sequel that just came out is going to have the same effect because the national sentiment just doesn’t run that way anymore. So, a toy celebrating “A Real American Hero” isn’t really acceptable now. That’s sad, but it is what it is. |

Joe was always "A real international hero" in Australia. And I know I spent a lot of time making a lot of them non-American in my mind.

It's not about whether patriotism is cool or "appropriate" or whatever the fuck. It's simply that Hasbro wants G.I. Joe to be an international brand, and the rest of the world--if you can believe it!--are not Americans. Now, granted, Hasbro doesn't want to get too "military" anyway because there are a parents who don't want their kids playing with "war toys," but it mostly just has to do with trying to sell the brand internationally.
