The simple answer may very well be "A manager told them not to."
And it may apply specifically to Bludd, or may be a "no looking in the back, period" policy (or a "no looking in the back for toys" policy). Target store managers have a lot of leeway in terms of specific-store policy. This is a big part of why they are so inconsistent from store-to-store. Also keep in mind Targets and Wal-Marts are kind of on "high alert" for stuff like this because of all the trading card craziness.

Look at the toys aisles. They go weeks, months with nothing on the shelves and pegs. They're just holding this shit in the back. How does that benefit the store? It would make me not want to shop at that store for anything because they don't have anything on the shelves for me buy. |

Which still doesn't make sense to me. Okay, I understand the "street date" thing. Hold those items in the back till the street date hits. Fine. But if it's a policy then we shouldn't be seeing those toys flooding Ebay by stateside sellers. If the stores have to hold them in back of the store then keep them in the back of the store.
Also, after the "street date" hits and they are still holding these. Look at the toys aisles. They go weeks, months with nothing on the shelves and pegs. They're just holding this shit in the back. How does that benefit the store? It would make me not want to shop at that store for anything because they don't have anything on the shelves for me buy. The bottom line is that exclusive toys and the people who clamor after them are a tiny fraction of Target's business, and many of the people who seek them often prove to be more trouble than they're worth as far as Target is concerned. If everyone on this site started a hardcore boycott of Target this instant, it likely wouldn't even amount to a rounding error in their bottom line. If every action figure collector in the world stopped buying from Target...they'd just stop carrying action figures and fill that space with something else that sells. And it still wouldn't likely make a noticeable dent in their bottom line. You're also posing a hypothetical that may or may not be true, and will vary by store. Meaning it's basically irrelevant to the conversation. There is conflicting information about a "Street date" for Bludd. There isn't one in Target's system, but the "May 18th/19th" has been bandied around enough that it's pretty clear that Target intended SOMETHING for around that date. Which brings me to another point: Sometimes things might not have a "Street date" but might be part of a particular endcap reset or the like, which basically gives them a "de-facto" street date if store managers choose to hold them back so that they don't reset an endcap to nothing but empty pegs on the appointed date. Not every store manager handles it the same way (meaning yeah, some places WILL reset endcaps to empty pegs and shelves), but either way that doesn't change that the boots-on-the-ground retail employee is probably not refusing to sell you that figure purely out of spite or laziness. Between having worked retail (albeit years ago) and knowing people that have (and do), your average retail employee would probably rather walk to the back and come back and make a customer happy than have them get upset by being told "no" but they're not going to risk a reprimand or even their job by going against manager/supervisor guidance. |

Employees (not from the toy department) at the two Targets I was in over the weekend both told me they expect to receive Major Bludd in their stores on 5/30. Kiosks in both stores came up with nada, also. One store has the newer touchscreen version and couldn't find Bludd at all in the system via barcode or DCPI. The second store has the older barcode-only scanner. That one came up with "Asteroid" in the system at least but "not available." This is in Montgomery County, MD, just north of Washington, DC.

I think you're grossly underestimated the amount of adults who now collect some sort of action figure (Joes, Star Wars, Transformers, Pops, Neca, etc). And it's adult's aged 18-54, aka the key demographic that everyone tries to cater to.

Good point. I was just poking fun. My local store is super helpful and friendly to me. I don't ever get the impression they would ever snipe product.
Back to the original post then, what would be a reason they would outright refuse to sell him the product when they confirmed it was in the stockroom and had no release date? I don't know what I would do if an employee would refuse to sell me something that I really wanted and I knew was there. Seems fishy. |

Success. Columbus, OH Lennox Town Center. Went to ask a fine MILF named Tammy or Tamina or something and she brought me one out. They had 4 in the back but would only bring me one. Limit one per guest. I was just strolling down the aisle and she was putting Star Wars Black Series and TVC on the pegs and asked if I needed help so I said sure whatcha got? She laughed and said no silly do you need some help with the toy aisle so I mentioned I was trying to track down a Bludd and she didn’t have any on the floor but had the 4 in the back. She brought one out and said here you go sir. I said ahhh you don’t have to call me sir and told her I would be back in a few weeks and I would be happy to buy her a Starbucks coffee for her troubles. She agreed. So we will see about the coffee but I got the fine Major.
