Just a general question - how much of a concern is sun and UV damage, with modern joes (25th Anniversary and Classified)
I have some of my collection on display in my home office. It is just an extra bedroom, but has big windows that gets decent amounts of sun. Most the time the curtains are closed, but I do like to work with them open some times, to enjoy the view. Nothing is in direct sunlight, but the room is pretty bright. I haven't noticed any discolouration on anything so far... is that even a concern with modern joes and modern paint/plastics? |

It's likely a concern. We are seeing Star Wars figures from 2005 and up starting to yellow very badly. Those are using the same plastics as Joes of the time. And, ARAH style Joes from the 2000's that use white or blue and some other colors are discoloring very badly, even with proper storage out of heat and light.

I think it's definitely a concern I have my 25th general hawk on display in my room with shades drawn and minimal natural light exposure and the overall color of the jacket is different than the carded one and the arms vs chest fading is noticeable as well. I also find it very noticeable on 30th life line.

He's the only one from that display to really show any damage, I think, so maybe we've got a brown plastic syndrome type of thing going on here that's specific to that figure. (My Conquest also developed sun damage, but... it never really was in the sun. May be a delayed onset thing from the prior owner._ |

Hmm... Just checked my Hawk figure and I didn't notice any obvious difference in browns between his arms and torso. I also don't think I have a carded one to compare against. He's been on display on the same shelf for about 5 years or so
Makes sense that UV would affect them. I guess I was just hoping that the newer paints wouldn't be as sensitive to sun fading. Do you guys do anything to protect them, long-term? Obviously keeping the curtains closed on really sunny days is a good start. I suppose I could rotate out the collection so that the same ones aren't up for the entire time. Maybe UV protective film on the windows? |

I have most of the 25th line on loose display in the corner of my office, not exposed to direct sunlight. I work in there 8 hours a day, lights on.
Only noticeable sun damage is to mainframe, his legs are starting to yellow. I checked ebay for replacements, but see the same thing. No issues with other figs. Stormshadows and snow job are just fine. So is hawk. |

Sun can cause discoloration, but it can happen anyway. I keep most of my Joes in cardboard flat boxes on shelves, which makes it easy for me to get the ones I want out at any given time. With that said, I've had a few modern figures discolor regardless of being kept out of the sunlight. Out of the 25th Sculpt ones, my Snake Eyes v38 (The apprentice one.) and my Mainframe yellowed. I, also, had a couple of Comic Book 3 Pack Joes discolor (Scarlett and Scrap Iron.) and my New Sculpt CC v15 discolored really bad. All and all, not bad considering all of the Joes I own. Still, not a fun thing to have happen, though.

I made separate threads about my favorite "New Sculpt" figure, Cobra Commander from VvV, and how the blue plastic turned a nasty green just from sitting in a sunless closet.
I bought a replacement years later and that one turned green too. Sometimes it's just the bad batch of plastic I guess. Still, it's always a good idea to keep ALL toys out of sunlight anyway. |

Hasbro plastic is cheap and vulnerable not so much to sunlight but high heat. And when that happens a lot can go wrong. Take for instance... I made a hooded cape for black series assaj ventress and one for legends retro scarlet witch. Stupidly left them with the hood on in the window for a week. After a week their faces had been stained by the color of the robes. Long story short I figured out why. It wasn't paint... instead the plastic makes the surface sticky when hot. The robes shed microscopic particles as all skin, paper and fabrics do. Throughout the week they stuck to the figure which would heat during the day and then cool at night. Thus adhered the particles to the cheap plastic. It was fixed with lots of acetone. Though sadly ventress was slightly ruined by she had head tattoos.
Ironically high heat straightens bent accessories but also damages hasbro figures. |
