Great cover.
You do realize that the reason the Vipers were created, and all the Something-Vipers, was to sell more toys. There was no practical reason, but it allowed Hasbro to come up with some more "out-there" designs and get creative. From a toy designer viewpoint, the ol' blueshirts were kind of bland and boring. There wasn't anything "flashy" to catch the eyes of the kids. The filecards are evidence that the Viper was meant to replace the Trooper. It's the 25th that created the mess-up of which does what purpose. The Vipers are (by filecard) the lowest of the low, but looking at 'em, it's pretty obvious that they'd be higher up the scale then a Blueshirt. Who in their right mind would take a promotion that gets you out of the body armor and hi-tech helmet?

I gotta go with no.
As a toy, they're fairly cool, but the heads on them make them look like monsters out of a bad 1950s sci-fi movie. If they'd had more normal helmets, I'd probably love them, but the skull face kills them for me. |

one last thing on this subject. G.i. Joe are spozed to be the hero and keep folks safe but if the vipers are under mind control then the joes are killing the same folks they are trying to protect. It now taints the joes and muddies the waters in a bad way. Like in issue #4 or 5 tanks for the memories. Cobra commander is running in a crowd of people by some children and steeler asks hawk why didn't he shoot him in the back of the head. Hawk looks at the children and say because we are the good guys we don't do that sorta thing.

See my comment above.
The Neo-Vipers are in no way the people "the Joes are trying to protect", they are people that volunteered and joined MARS/Cobra. They aren't innocents taken off the street, or even soldiers kidnapped/taken from military bases against their wills.

You know, I wonder if Flagg ever regretted not taking the shot. I mean, he didn't have that long to regret, he only lived another 11 issues, but if he had lived..
I think he would have taken the shot. And he should have taken the shot. The "we're the good guys and we don't do that" is a BS thing done because it was a mid-80s comic book aimed at kids and at that time you never showed a hero doing morally wrong things. Is it morally wrong to shoot someone in the back? Yes. But isn't it also morally wrong to let someone go that is a killer of innocents and would undoubtedly cause more innocent deaths in the future, especially if you have the power/skill to stop him and it's also your job to stop people like that?

It was Gen. Flagg, not Hawk.
You're kind of overlooking something though, and it does get explained in the movie (or at least the novelization, though I can't see the scene making it to the cutting room floor, let's just say there's a reason why the Crimson Neo-Vipers come with a caged snake). The nano-mites are used to ENHANCE the Neo-Viper soldiers, not necessarily mind control. They aren't under mind control all the time. The nano-mites allow CC to take control, but are used primarily to short out the pain receptors. |

At the end, you're kind of left wondering how much of the Baroness was mind control and how much was her doing it herself.
Only one scene, that I know of, that definately shows a Neo-Viper being mind controled. In the video game, which picks up right after the movie, the Baroness is definately bad and not being mind controled. You know.. this just clicked... in the comics the Baroness becomes an international terrorist because of the death of her brother. In RoC, the Baroness becomes an international terrorist because of the "death" of her brother.

I like the new vipers - but they aren't vipers in my book. They are something new. Originally I was going to buy one of each and have them be a special team. Then I started army building. I like the serpentor/coil idea - it fits that a genetic experiment leader would have an army of genetic experiments.

Now on a money making side no he'd never shoot because the series would be over. On the moral side if you want to be a hero, good, jedi or what ever you don't do what is easy you do what is right. It's really simple you don't gun a man down in cold blood in front of children you bring him to justice. He stands trial and you uphold the law. You don't break it to get what you want. You can never do a little evil to get allot of good. It never works that way. That is the path to the dark side. |

It's not right to take the shoot and prevent the loss of more innocent lives?
Heroes have to make the tough choices. He would have died a hero regardless of if he took the shot or not. One "mistake" does not destroy a career. Besides, to the people in charge, it wouldn't be a mistake, it would of been another medal. Since you bring the Force and Jedi into it, have you read the Legacy of the Force series (the one that just ended, not the new one that just started)? There's parts of it, especially in the 8th book (which I'm reading now), that are relevant to this part of the discussion. The very question of "is it right for Jedi to kill" is brought up. Luke warns a planet about an attack and the planet kills 3 ships and kills 100 people. Of course Luke feels guilty about it, but at the end of the day, he realizes the overall greater good was served because more lives were saved. Does that mean Luke took a step to the dark side? No, taking the step would have been sitting back and doing nothing and letting the invasion happen and having the power to prevent it and doing nothing. Sometimes the right thing is the wrong thing, if that makes sense. Of course the first choice for Flagg would have been to capture him and bring him to justice. But barring that? How is it heroic for Flagg to let him go, knowing that CC will cause more death and destruction before he's brought to justice? I don't think it's as black and white. Especially is this day and age. There are alot of cases I can think of off the top of my head, where the right thing to do would have been (if given the chance) doing one wrong thing to prevent many more wrongs.
