Hello all, I'm new here and recently got the itch to start collecting G.I. Joe.
I was born in 84 and into G.I. Joe in the early 90's and I'm sure like many of you I sold off all my G.I. Joe toys in yard sales when I lost interest. Now I'm mid 30's with kids that are the perfect age for G.I. Joes and I'm feeling the desire to get into 3.75" Joe collecting and sharing that fun with my children. It feels like maybe a good time to get back in with the Retro line launching soon but through the research I've been doing I'm seeing that there are possibly some figure/vehicle compatibility issues with the modern figures. My collection goal will be to get stuff primarily to play with my kids and possibly display when we aren't playing. I'd prioritize durability and play-value first and actual character design second. I'd like to have representations of the major characters from the ARAH cartoon but they don't have to be spot on or anything. So which line and what vehicles should I go after? As far as I'm concerned the less expensive the better because then I can get more figures and vehicles. Thanks for any help/direction! |

The cheapest thing to do is probably collect Modern Era Figures using the Retro line as your backbone.
If you don't care much about looks or articulation, the 25th line can be used to supplement the ME figures for particularly expensive characters. Many core character 25th figures can be had fairly cheaply on eBay. The next Retro assortment will include Destro, Scarlett, and Roadblock. Combine that with Snake Eyes, Baroness, and Storm Shadow, along with the third wave of Duke and Cobra Commander, and you've got a pretty good ME collection already, particularly for play.

I agree with jscott991, the forthcoming retro line would be a great way to get some great looking figures that represent core characters from the 1980s, plus they are making the H.I.S.S. and AWE Striker, 2 classic vehicles. Many of the 25th anniversary figures can be purchased loose for reasonable prices, and most are pretty faithful representations of their 1980s characters. Carded and boxed items are starting to get rather pricey; especially with the POC/30th lines. I would avoid getting vintage toys if you want your kids to “play” with them. A lot of the vintage vehicles, playsets, and figures still look great. But they are display pieces. Many are becoming very fragile. Toys like the Whale have so many parts that break if you sneeze on them lol! Some 25th Annversary figures that I would recommend( can be purchased loose for reasonable amounts )
1. 1989 style Snake Eyes 2. Airborne 3. Stalker( single carded version ) 4. 1986 style Hawk 5. Retaliation Ultimate Storm Shadow 6. Retaliation Ultimate Snake Eyes( although the head is wrong ) 7. Retaliation Ultimate Cobra Commander 8. 25th Zartan with Swamp Skier 9. 25th Battle Android Trooper( awesome figure ) And so many more, feel free to pm if you have questions. |

This'll be a controversial opinion, but for sheer play/durability I'd recommend the period of Joe known as new sculpt (2002-06), and perhaps focusing on the original ARAH run and modern Joes for display only.
I say this because originals are both expensive and fragile, and becoming more so every year, while modern era Joes make much better display pieces than toys- the accessories are annoying enough to get to stay in place for display, let alone a battle or two. The price on moderns has been soaring as well. New sculpt figures, however, are dirt cheap and still durable, being kind of a "bridge" between both eras- made of newer plastics, but still maintaining the playability of the original run. There is a trade off, though- some (most) of the designs are pretty cartoonish. For kids though, they're a low risk entry into the hobby.

I agree with Satan. The OG figures and vehicles are showing their age (as in the plastic literally aging and becoming brittle) and the newer figures from '07 onwards are expensive (not that '80s Joes aren't) but that inbetween? That's a good sweet spot, especially for a kid.
Spy Troops and Valor vs Venom were my little brother's introduction to G.I. Joe, and he loved them. The plastic is newer and better formulated so they're durable as all get out and, as I recently re-discovered, the o-rings feel really nice in hand during play. They're not the prettiest figures ever, but they're relatively cheap, plentiful, and I can tell you through experience that a kid won't have problems connecting most mid-'00s Joes to their old school counterparts. You already know to go newer when possible for vehicles if compatibility, play (the last thing you want is to feel scared when trying to snap a canopy closed!) or cost is concerned. I personally have halted getting certain vintage vehicles I want because future Retro line vehicles haven't been revealed yet. If you can get it at retail, you could get 3 or 4 Retro HISS tanks for the price of a single vintage one in similar condition.

To add to both my own and Allamaraine's perspectives on new sculpt, I thought I'd give a few examples of figures from that era that are pretty solid.
First, the later on you get in the era, the better some of the sculpt work is. There are three main series in all: GIJoe vs. Cobra, Spy Troops and Valor vs. Venom. There is also a small "direct to consumer" line that came right after VvV ended, but not many figures were released, because the 25th anniversary line was coming up. While there are decent figures in all of them, JvC was largely made up of outlandishly proportioned figures, whereas by VvV, Hasbro was starting to kind of hit their stride. As an added bonus to the whole new sculpt era, there are also some pretty cool ARAH repaints peppered throughout the lines. Some standouts from the main three series (IMO) are linked below. This is by no means a comprehensive list of "the good ones", just a few that come to mind immediately, many of which I'm actively reacquiring myself. https://www.yojoe.com/action/02/dusty8.shtml https://www.yojoe.com/action/02/sgtstalker.shtml https://www.yojoe.com/action/02/wildbill5.shtml https://www.yojoe.com/action/02/snakeeyes14.shtml https://www.yojoe.com/action/03/blackout.shtml https://www.yojoe.com/action/03/burnout.shtml https://www.yojoe.com/action/03/cobracommander15.shtml https://www.yojoe.com/action/03/crosshair.shtml https://www.yojoe.com/action/03/dart2.shtml https://www.yojoe.com/action/03/roadblock9.shtml https://www.yojoe.com/action/03/sandviper.shtml https://www.yojoe.com/action/03/scalpel.shtml https://www.yojoe.com/action/03/zarana2.shtml https://www.yojoe.com/action/03/widescope.shtml https://www.yojoe.com/action/03/sgthacker.shtml https://www.yojoe.com/action/04/agentjinx2.shtml https://www.yojoe.com/action/04/beachhead7.shtml https://www.yojoe.com/action/04/generalabernathy2.shtml https://www.yojoe.com/action/04/scarlett4.shtml https://www.yojoe.com/action/04/stormshadow15.shtml https://www.yojoe.com/action/04/ghostbear.shtml https://www.yojoe.com/action/05/sgtbazooka2.shtml https://www.yojoe.com/action/05/shipwreck9.shtml https://www.yojoe.com/action/05/snakeeyes23.shtml

I’m with Sata and Alla. The modern era post-2007 figures are modern but not durable. I have had so many figures that have loose joints right out of the package even that I’m not bothering with the Retro line, also partly because of a complete lack of effort from Hasbro.
The 2002-06 era that Sata and Al are referring to is a good place to look at for what you’re wanting to do. Any ME figures that my boys have had got worn so quickly as they lost interest and handed them back to me. They like other franchises and other scales more.

Doesn't it feel good to offer an "unpopular opinion" and have a bunch of people jump out to say you're totally right?
Y'all are making me want to see if I still have all the parts for Cobra Mountain....

Ultimately it's up to the OP what he is looking for, so what's the point of people coming in and slamming your opinions about what figures would be good for play?
For many reasons, I still think the OP would be better off going a mix of ME and 25th, using Retro and cheap eBay prices to build out a collection, even for play. But you guys make a great case to try something different.
