Has anyone seen ANY of the Reaction Joes sell? My Target's have full pegs of them... and it doesn't appear that a single figure has sold yet. From a layman's perspective - it makes GIJoe look like it's not selling. Makes me wonder - is all the licensing of GIJoe and all the retro lines and various things bad for the brand? Does it make GIJoe look bad?
The main Classified seems to be firing on all cylinders. however - Movie figures have not sold well at all. Retro line at Walmart is still sitting on the shelves. Reaction figures don't seem to be selling. Diecast stuff is not moving and doesn't appear that it ever did. Opinions? |

It appears only Target has ReAction in brick & mortar here and seems to be selling to the point only like 3 left on pegs. Snake Eyes Origins 5" and 6" seem unwanted at full price.
Can't help think if the Walmart Retro Stalker production was reduced to 75% and filled the other 25% with Wave 1, 2, 3 reissues, would have sold better since those early waves were significantly harder to find. For quite a while the Jada diecast RPG figurines were unsold and still unsold on clearance and ended up in Ross. If the GI Joe diecast vehicles were 1/64 scale like Hot Wheels, I'd buy for sure. I can't buy the tiny ones. Last edited by ohtani; 03-09-2022 at 09:39 PM.. |

I firmly believe there is a disconnect between retail purchasers, collectors, and manufacturers.
This belief that there needs to be some movie tie in to sell products is just wrong. We see it time and time again. They could probably get a better return just running actual commercials on TV for toys. So they make tons of different crap that doesn't sell, but is branded, and piggybacks off of the core product line. The stuff doesn't sell. Retail doesn't order because they equate A with B. The core line moves fine as long as it's quality product. That's really the key. Quality product. Look at the classified movie figures. There isn't one that I had to have. I bought them, but that's not really relevant, because I bought one of everything. For the person on a tight budget, or just dipping thier toes back in, they will pick and choose carefully. They may look through every figure, not just Joes, but every figure on that shelf for something that screams buy me. Of the classified figures, 18 and 19 definitely aren't screaming out to people. One would hope corporate would look at more than just numbers, and try to see what just doesn't pop. Why that is, and try to learn from these mistakes. I don't mean to be critical, because there are so many home runs in this line. I just feel like there is a lesson here. Both seem like generic figures in all black. Reminds me of ROC fiasco with every figure in black. |

SE Origins, Shang-Chi, & Eternals figures all kind of blend together on the shelves. There’s nothing about any of them that pops out. With so many years of Marvel Legends & Star Wars Black at this point, what parent isn’t going to look at all that drabness & say “don’t you already have that?”.

ReAction seems to be selling in my area in the Targets that carry it. The only pegwarmer is that blue Snake Eyes.
I want to know who the Jada Toys products are for. Who collects monopose metal weirdly-sized figures? Does anyone? They're not useful as game pieces and aren't in scale with anything else. it's super strange. |

Licensing usually ends up costing the customer more, though. That's the main drawback. Mafex, Bandai, and S.H. Figuarts usually make superior Marvel and Star Wars figures to Hasbro, but they are a lot more expensive. Same with the Super 7 Ultimates G.I. Joe figures. If we could get Mafex/Super 7/etc... quality, with Hasbro prices, that would be brilliant.

I don't mean to be critical, because there are so many home runs in this line. I just feel like there is a lesson here. Both seem like generic figures in all black. Reminds me of ROC fiasco with every figure in black. It's been said many times but bears repeating: There is no magic formula for success. However the BIGGEST successes in the toy business (in the last 50-ish years) have been from media tie-ins that blew up, and so they keep chasing that slim chance that whatever this year's blockbuster is is gonna be "the one" that becomes the next Star Wars or or Batman ('89) or Transformers ('07). Because the amount of money made when something goes big like that more than makes up for all the failed attempts that precede it. Or conversely take the Marvel approach where it's all just one long continuing blockbuster. Either way, shareholders don't want Hasbro focusing on keeping just a core group of adult collectors consistently happy. They want them focusing on chasing the next big thing. Hasbro's got enough plates spinning that they can get away with a fair amount of collector-coddling, but when the rubber meets the road the shareholders would axe a consistent but modest seller in a heartbeat to put those resources into something they think will make them more money. And even if they're wrong it doesn't change their habits because see above: One "Star Wars" or MCU is worth a hundred failed movie "pushes" and then some. The only way it's going to change is when something that doesn't have a media tie-in becomes a massive hit on par with the big movie lines of yesteryear. And at that point maybe the "recipe" gets modified, but until then don't expect anything different in the usual patterns. Last edited by Jmacq1; 03-10-2022 at 03:31 PM.. |

Every now and then they'll "get it right", a case being Alley Viper. It's pretty much a universally-loved figure, even to those that don't have, or never had, the original orange figure. No movie tie-in, no cartoon or comic, no video game, just a fantastic figure that caters to both the vintage crowd and new collectors.

In any case, licensing of Joe is what it is. It's not a bad thing to have the brand out there. I'll admit the ReActions kinda piss me off, because they're very eye-catching on shelves (Especially for those who recognize them) but once you realize what they are they're very disappointing. I may have no interest in revisiting the O-Ring era of figures but even I will say that if the ReACtion Joes were instead the "new/old" Retro O-Ring Joes on the Reaction cards they would be better received. Instead they seem to be banking on nostalgia for...a product that never quite existed because a superior product was already out? The only props I'll give is that some of their reveals have been amusing/interesting.
Anyway, the other point being almost all the licensed stuff is aimed purely at Adult/Older collectors. And while Hasbro seems fine acknowledging that there are a lot of adult collectors enjoying Classified, the fact that they may even be sub-licensing "modern" 3.75/4" joes to Hiya Toys seems to be a subtle clue that Hasbro themselves doesn't have the desire or patience to cater to "us" with that kind of product directly anymore. |
