Whoever did this definitely knew what they were after at the very least. But then again, the ease of fencing this kind of thing has increased with the proliferation of the internet, and shows like Storage Wars and Pawn Stars have put our hobby on the average Joe's radar. Either way, talk about soul crushing. |

Damn. I hate a fucking thief. Only thing worse is a pedophile or murderer.
My storage facility has a keypad entry system and video surveillance. My unit is in their climate controlled building. I guess nothing is 100% safe though. Thinking about doing a check now.

Looking at the storage unit, it might have been possible for anyone driving by, to see him loading and unloading stuff. If he was there in the middle of the day on Saturday, possibly lots of people saw the items and assumed they were expensive.
I have toured a number of storage facilities. This looks like a mom and pop kind of place. Around Austin Texas, those places very often have chicken wire in the top foot or two. So someone could easily look into adjoining units to assess which ones they want to break into, or give a heads up to their buddies/partners. Depending on the location of a unit in the building, the size of the units, and the size of any gaps at the top, I suspect an endoscope or similar type camera would give people a good idea of which unit to target. $30,000 is an astronomical number for any toy collection not unrealistic by any means but its still a lot of pieces. The article states he had 3 flaggs thats only $3600 ( based on the articles high value) that alone is already taking up about 2/3 of your average pick up truck. Granted it was probably done with a box truck ( Uhaul etc) factor getting that into the facility, I am guessing middle of the night and time to load it and get out. I'd imagine even with a few guys this took over an hour. That is a lot of time for your average run of the mill thief to spend considering most are just looking for a quick snatch and go. Now consider storage of and the amount of time it would take to sell a typical collection of that size and I would think most thieves would think twice. This was definitely done by someone who knows what they are getting into and knew what they were getting.

Joe collectors should keep an eye out for this stuff being resold and try to help find the culprit. 3 Flaggs were among the stolen goods.

I had a storage facility broken into almost 2 years ago and had a bunch of comics and toys stolen. I was able to catch the guys by going to local comic and vintage toy stores and tell them to look out for certain items. I wound up catching one guy in the act of trying to sell some of my stuff. I could prove it was mine because the the boxes and totes had my writing on it. A second guy was caught through another comic dealer I talked with. The thieves saw my collection when I was putting stuff in it and they were at another unit. My insurance company valued the goods that were not recovered as $9000 but I had eat $2000 of it as a deductible. I didn't rebuy everything but I did recreate my Marvel Gi Joe comic collection from scratch. Issue 155 alone cost me $50. It would have made more sense to but trade collectios, but I was stubborn as I have almost every Joe comic from every publisher and I wanted those comics back in their original form. The same with all my DC crisis type series.

Glad you caught them. What kind of insurance policy did you have for that stuff? And when you're cashing in, did you have a written record of everything that was lost or photographic records? Or did you reconstruct what you had from memory?

My storage unit has insurance included in the monthly rent. I didn't know I had it or that I had the minimum which pays a total of $2000 minus a $100 deductible. Which isn't squat compared to my actual loss. I provided collection pics, old order receipts from online stores that keep records of previous purchases to insurance company and to the police.

Why the hell would you have so much stuff in a storage unit anyway? I have most of my Joes in a closet, and feel kind of bad about not dislaying them all. I can't imaging why you'd hoard $30k worth of toys in a storage unit.
I'm not in anyway saying it's okay, or that it's his own fault. Just not understanding the hoarder mentality. |
