Hello everyone,
My amazing wife has offered to give me a great holiday and birthday (since they are only a few months apart) present this year: she is going to buy everything I need to transform my toy room into a proper display room! New cabinets, new shelves, new cases! She is amazing! Anyways, in our first home, I didn't have space to display all that much; just a few figures on about 3 shelves and the rest of my collection lived in totes in a large closet. When we bought this house, we both wanted a fun tv/entertainment room in the basement and I also asked that there be a spare bedroom near that room that I could use for a display/toy/play room. Luckily we found the perfect house that had both required spaces. When we moved in, I was so excited to have a room just for my toys I didn't really care how the stuff was displayed, just that it was. I reused (and purchased more) floating shelves I had from the old house along with a few Detolf cases. The rest went on plastic shelving units that you would typically buy for a garage or storage room. At the time I liked those as they looked industrial and almost space station like and that for well for my Joes and Star Wars stuff. 4.5 years later and now it drives me a bit nuts. All my vehicles are facing straight out (meaning you can only see the front of the vehicles) and everything is just kinda everywhere. It actually stresses me out to go into the room and see a jumbled mess and thats the opposite of what it suppose to do. Anyways, after a week or so of careful measuring, planning, and online shopping, I have a plan to execute so that the room will look more art gallery and less flea market. Now, onto the reason for this post: I am a 4 inch and or 1/18 vehicle collector. I love displaying vehicles and now I will also be able to display figures as well. I do not mind not being able to display all of my figures, but I would love to display all of my vehicles. While planning out the new layout, I realized that I will not be able to display everything. Now, for those of you who have a ton of stuff, how do you go about displaying? Do you: 1) Rotate out the collection from time to time? 2) Slim down the collection to only display what you have room for? My main issue is that I will not have room to display all my Star Wars ships nor all of my 24 various Joe jets and helo's. I don't want to get rid of them, but I also want to get them off the floor where a lot of them currently reside. I will take some photos of the mess I currently live with. Thoughts? |

I only display my figures, so I won’t be of any help. However, your toy room project sounds epic! I’d love to see pics of the finished product!

Toy Room:
Sorry for the sideways photos (can I rotate those?) The last photo is the closet...head to toe totes of figure and vehicles... Lots of stuff not shown... :( Last edited by nightrattler; 04-12-2020 at 01:22 PM.. |

The fun entertainment room just for kicks (and a bit more of my collection):
For scale, the TV is a 65". My wife gave me full reign of the basement decor, the only stipulation is that the toys cannot migrate upstairs (a few diecast cars did make it up the stairs...tehee...) Last edited by nightrattler; 04-12-2020 at 01:22 PM.. |

Looking good man! as a guy that had similar issues once upon a time (used to have a 15-20 foot diorama, and even that wasn't near big enough) I would recommend mounting your aircraft for an "in flight" look from the ceiling, and freeing up some shelf space. Granted, that would render the stands without purpose, but that's my 2 cents. Other wise... lucky bastard! I miss my dedicated toy room!

My wife suggested I hang some from the ceiling as well. I just don’t trust myself to do it and not have them fall and I’m kinda lazy when it comes to dusting, so having to pull the off the the ceiling to dust seems daunting as well. |

I've always used fishing line with a good weight rating, and used three strands to loop around the cockpit and wings (or afterburners, in the case of my Sky Striker). Really the important part is to make sure where you're looping can support the weight, and making sure the hooks are secured in a stud. As far as dust goes, I've always used salvaged sliding glass doors to fashion a floor to ceiling enclosure, because I'm a bit of a cheap bastard when it comes to things like that. They're pretty easy to find on the free/cheap, and very simple to rig up and make look nice. I always keep my toys behind glass when possible, because I don't want to dust them ever, even the ones at ground level!;) That bit's probably a bit more labor intensive than most would want to go, but it did cut my dusting down from bi weekly to... well, never again. In any case, however you go, you've got a cool set up coming along, keep dropping pics as you progress (and apologies for the "tutorial", it's just my MO to type 3-4 paragraphs when a sentence or three would suffice)!

Those rooms look great already so whatever you choose will probably be awesome. We are both lucky that our gals are supportive of what we do. I am currently trying to refigure out my setup as well. My girl recently found me some 4x6 cases with sliding glass doors from an antique store that was going out of business for next to nothing. I've been trying to figure out if I want to move my detolfs (which seems like a lot of work) or put the new cases somewhere else. So, unfortunately, I have no real advice to give you other than these are awesome problems to have.
