I collect a lot if Joe stuff, and my statues and 12 inch figures (including Sideshow ones) are out of the boxes on display. My vintage vehicles are also loose and on display. My modern figures are still on the card but can be seen, just like some the modern diorama sets and smaller modern vehicles can be viewed while still in the boxes.
My question however, is whether to break the seal and open up those larger modern vehicle boxes, the ones where you don't see the actual toy. Some of these MIB vehicles seem to fetch a good price on eBay, though I have no intention on selling them in the near future. What are your thoughts on this matter? Do most of you open or keep them mint? |

Like what vehicles?
In the end it's what you like to do. To me, the toys are far more interesting than the boxes (especially modern packaging). The only reason I don't open something is if I haven't decided where to put it in my display yet. |

i say go for it, for me the true value is the toys themselves. call me nuts, but if i stumbled across a MOC '85 snakeeyes, i'd open it just to relive the feeling of past christmases, birthdays, etc. can't take it with you after all! besides, the "collector's market" won't exist forever, and is bound to bottom out eventually.

I wouldn't. If you have a Water Moccasin (Sting Raider) or HISS in good boxed condition, keep it that way, and buy loose vehicles for much cheaper.

As far as modern vehicles go, it is basically anything that came out in the 25th, 30th, and 50th anniversary lines, and ROC, POC, and Retaliation lines. For example, there is the Rhino and Night Raven in ROC, the Eaglehawk, the Skystriker in the 30th Anniversary, some 2 vehicle packs in the 50th. Starting to collect loose vintage toys and watching you tube videos of vintage and modern vehicles is what got me thinking about it.

I've always heard buy in 3s. One to open, one to keep sealed and one to sale/trade at later date. Now since didn't have the money, I was only able to buy 2 of certain things.

I doubt I have any additional advice of value, but this is the internet so I will throw in my $.02.
I don't open stuff until I am "ready" to open it whether to display, play, or customize. Frankly, the value in the toy, IMHO, is being able to hold and use the toy, so I say open away. But, I have a bunch, 5 or so, NCCs that I bought on clearance at Ross or one of those places. They are still in the box because I haven't decided what to do with them, not because I expect to retire on my re-sale of them. I figure, the box is a good way to store them until I decide I need to open one, and hey, maybe someone makes me an offer. Same with figures, I mostly keep them on the card, until I just feel like opening one or opening one for customizing. I do think the point above, about finding loose ones for sale, is good if you have something uniquely rare or valuable. |

I actually appreciate all the comments on this issue. I think right now that I am going to assess what space I have to display these modern vehicles and maybe first open those vehicles for which I don't have a vintage equivalent, and go from there. I will probably also check some of the prices before I do so, but it's not like I have a USS Flagg still in the box.
