Hey everyone. Since this is the first thread I have ever started on here, let me just preface my question with a brief bit of backstory on my self.
I collected ARAH feverishly from 82 to around 93. I remember getting that ninja force zartan and thinking that maybe Hasbro was running out of ideas. Anyway my intrest waned and I just dropped the ball on the Joe part of my collecting.I eventually returned to the Joe-verse with ,of all things,Sigma 6. I also picked up some DTC around that time too So I missed out on the various incarnations of Joes up to that point. I did get a handful of VvV figures a few months before 25th Ann.came around but I certainly missed out on that line. I haven't really heard too many things(good or bad) about the eras missed and was curious about your opinions on those lines. I realize that the stuff from 07 thru now is generally a better product. So I am not seeking opinions as compared to that Without further ado. What were/are your thoughts or reviews on the following: 1- Sgt Savage 2-GI Joe Extreme 3-GI Joe vs Cobra 4-Spy Troops 5-Valor vs Venom I am seriously thinking of re-collecting vintage and want to look into these lines as welll Any advice? Would you recommend any particular lines? Or recommend me to stay away from any particular ones? If so why? Thanks for your time everyone. And Happy Holidays! |

Sgt. Savage was a pretty good concept. The figures size and construction hampered them.
The rest can go jump in the river. There were a few good items to come out of the VvV line, but the rest is garbage. |

Spytroops and VvV were different figure construction, so generally get looked down upon as the red headed stepchildren of G.I. Joe. There are some good figures but whether it's good or not will have to be up to you.
Extreme and Savage were different scales and different continuity (no Duke, Scarlett, SE, Cobra, etc..)

I still have all of the Sgt. Savage collection and the mail away. I loved them as a kid, they were awkward to play with in scale to other figures, Xmen were too big, joes too small... but all was well in my book and i didnt even mind the construction.
Extreme was not my thing, I bought them on sale so i could have army troops with my xmen. as for the others i missed out on them completely

I don't like any of those lines. I am strictly ARAH or 25th. But it depends on what you are into, I like my Joes to mimic what I seen in the cartoon when I was younger. Just check them out, if you like what you see, go for it.

Spytroops and VsV were cool in concept, and had a few good vehicles, but overall, not worth going and finding after the fact. ... Sigma 6...Ain't gonna comment. Just stick with ARAH, Modern Era, Resolute, and a good portion of RoC/PoC

I'm down with the VvV. Most of them you can get so cheap it's an easy era to collect. Hell, I grabbed all the single cards at Marshalls in November for 1.99 each. For me, the 25th line really got me back into collecting. Walking into KB toys and seeing a single carded Storm Shadow hanging there made me 6 years old again, nothing can take that away!

This was an odd time for Joe.
There are a few figs from that era that i really like, most are a total pass. If they had stayed in that direction, i wouldn't be collecting like i do now. If you are into the comics from that time period, they would be a lot more interesting to you since they have characters unique to those story lines... |

1- Sgt Savage
Oversized figures but they still have the Joe articulation, just won't fit in will with your vintage due to the size 2-GI Joe Extreme Oversized crap, limited articulation 3-GI Joe vs Cobra Brought GI Joe back to 3 3/4" Some decent sculpts and interesting updates on characters, the first wave all have T-Croches, but a few of those (Cobra Commander for example) were re-released with O-Rings in place of the Star Wars T-Crotch 4-Spy Troops My favorite line out of all of thses, the sculpts were pretty good and you got many new updates to old characters, plus a lot of them had removable armor/disguises. The proportions are a little out of whack on some figures, Hasbro hadn't quite figured out how to do small shoulder joints yet. 5-Valor vs Venom Same as Spy Troops, you got a lot of new updates and some interesting characters, this time all of Cobra had some sort of animal dna spliced into them so you could come out with some monster looking thing like Venomous Maximus but there were some real gems like Dr. Mindbender who I believe was the most well recieved update of a classic figure ever. You also got the first 3 3/4" Cobra Commander with removable battle helmet and hood with this line. Just like Spy Troops there were some proportion issues here and there and a few figures with some "Action" gimmick that would give them the dreaded T-Crotch and limit the posability though. |

I tried collecting some of the Spy Troops and VvV back when it was on the shelves. I really thought I was getting back into Joes at that time. Sadly, after a month or so with both lines, I stopped because the sculpts just weren't doing it for me.
