So, for xmas, I got a 1997 Commando Team pack. It's the only vintage-based thing I own nowadays and I gleaned at least five pertinent things from it:
1). The vintage guys are still fun, although dated, and I kinda miss the smaller size/more simplistic "feel." 2). This version Storm Shadow has a new backpack. I had always assumed it was the original mold, but it's lacking the molded on decorative detail and is two separate pieces instead of one piece with a hinge. Also, his bow won't stay tabbed on worth shit. 3). I've read of people saying the '97-'98 stuff is made from cheap plastic, but I actually like the softer plastic used. Doesn't feel overly cheap to me. 4). As much as people say the vintage stuff is easier to play with/pose, I gotta say they're still plenty fiddly. And there are no two-handed shooting poses to be had with the old guys. 5). The buttons on vintage Lady Jaye's shirt look like pokies...my wife pointed that out. lol Actually, now that I think about it, I seem to remember my dad noticing that when I was kid. Anyway, based on this experience, I gotta say that there really isn't some great difference in playibility between vintage and modern. The new guys are definitely more posable, thanks to the increased articulation, but the old guys aren't exactly shit in that regard. And while the softer plastic of the hands of the modern guys can make holding weapons an issue sometimes, it also often aides in holding & posing. So, in conclusion, they all great toys. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Last edited by SmokeBellew; 02-07-2018 at 03:44 PM.. |

I loved the 90's TRU stuff. Back before the internet, I had no idea they were coming, just walked in one day and there they were. Still love the Vypra w/ Rattler (Stinger) and the Cobra Polar 3 pack.

Yeah man, I mostly dig those toys. I used to have a camo Conquest and other stuff, but all I have left is the tan Slugger and now this Commando Team pack. They made some questionable choices in deco though. Like, Storm Shadow's paint could be better applied and, well, less stupid. Overall though, I think it's some cool stuff.

I wish they had made more ARAH reissues, and if not used the old paint schemes atleast used better ones. Some of them are out there, like Gung-Ho or purple Cobra Commander from the three pack or the whole sound attack 8 pack.
But some of them are just perfect, like Shock Viper or Shipwreck (two pack) or Crossfire and Fast Blast Viper and Laser Viper. Especially Dial Tone and Major Bludd. That Major Bludd is probably my favorite version of him. Such a good repaint. Almost forgot, Ambush. Another perfect repaint. Edit: forgot they renamed him Sidetrack. But hes still Ambush in my book. Hasbro and later the club, really showed there was more life to the old o-ring figures. Some of the figures they really brought out all the little details, or a simple camo change made a world of difference. Although probably the best update of all was the soft plastic on the hands. Finally no more broken thumbs! At times though I have to question Hasbro's parts choices. I know not all the parts were available, so they had to make do. But why did they use those odd arms for Crimson Guards when they still had the old upper, they could have used the 6 pack Cobra Infantry arms and been perfect. Or all the Duke's with short sleeves. Oddly they used a short sleeve arm on a comic pack Stalker that used Duke's torso and legs. Those arms would have been the best for Duke. But anyhow I loved the return of ARAH, although I didn't get into collecting again until 2003 and not serious until almost 2005. I passed up a lot of stuff that ended up costing me alot later on to get. I still kick myself for passing up on all those 1997 ARAH TRU vehicles, especially the Rattler 4WD. I picked one up, had it in my hands and put it back. At the time I had just graduated and still thought "toys were for kids". I was there to buy video games lol. |

The Firefly and Undertow 2 pack from the 2000 line is perfect, to me. Love it.

When I heard Joes were coming back to TRU in 97(?) , I was ecstatic, until I saw them. The Stars and Stripes set was horrible. To me it looked like they took whatever molds they had, slapped old names at random and crappy paint on them and called it a day. I pretty much ignored everything after that. I regret that decision now though because looking back, they followed up with some GREAT stuff in the next couple of years, some of which I am still hunting down today.

Stars & Stripes set errors were the factory swapping out molds because they couldn't find the originals, and Hasbro didn't have time to fix everything. At least that's what I read some years ago somewhere. Also why there's two Snake-Eyes v1 and Armored Cobra Commander, they were supposed to be V2 and original Cobra Commander.

They didn't have the original CG mold, those parts were recasted to make Agent Faces (then the rest), they cheaped out and used arms from DUKE 1992 and Shockwave 1992. But, you are right, there were better options. Hasbro was lazy and kept reusing the same mistakes/parts swaps from 1997. Same with Viper, Alley-Viper and Snake-Eyes having a Roadblock waist. |

That Roadblock waist...thats another one, I had forgotten about it. Kinda shows I haven't had these figures out in many years. When they made, was it Zap ? For the comic packs and had the old straight arm waist, did they remake that or did they find the old one ? Was always curious about that.
