I can't believe Hasbro never fully realized (or underestimated) the adult Joe collector, at least during the 25th Ann./Modern Era years. They had a great approach for the 12 inch Joes in the mid 90's until the mid 00's, with limited editions, store exclusives, vintage repro figures/artwork/packaging, etc., as well as some new concepts that seemed to be very well received by collectors (like the historic collection, The Vietnam Wall set, modern military). Even my older brother, who was not a toy collector, went nuts over and bought the Gen. Patton figure. It would have been nice for them to keep the 25th Ann. style packaging going (as cool as POC figures and toys were, the packaging didn't grab the eye as well) which I think is a big part of collecting today, due to the many MOC/MIB guys. For a while, even I was getting 2 of all 25th Ann. figures, one to open, one to keep MOC, which is real rarity for me but the explosion-backs were just too awesome.
I think if they had more Q&A's or polls for collectors, gauged what was really wanted, tried to cash in more on the nostalgia factor instead of trying to compete with video games, etc. for the younger kids' market, things would have worked out a little different. Still, they gave us a lot of cool stuff in the last 10 years. I think Hasbro knows of the fans and collectors but the bottom line is the number of the fans/collectors start to decrease over time, thus causing the "Deth of Line." New fans/collectors need to be present for the line to survive. Hopefully, with the new movie and other media pushes (Cartoon/video game/commercials) new fans will come on board.

After listening to Mark Weber's podcast, it seems that he did have the ear of the fans/collectors, but given that there are about 3000-5000 fans/collectors (based on how many people show up to Joecon), that is just not enough to support a full line of action figures. If they get more interest from kids and their moms, then the numbers needed to support a line would greatly increase. Only after that point, we could get more figures and the bigger vehicles.

I often wonder if Hasbro has ever done an analysis of Ebay to see how sought after GI Joe is on the secondary market. I personally would love to know what sales are on ebay over the course of a year for the ARAH and Modern lines.
I think Joe could make a definite profit if they released the things us as collectors want and kept it as a niche with limited production/distribution. I personally don't believe action figures are the past - their are plenty of lines out there. Disney/Barbie are both still around (I have a daughter so I know these things lol). It's more a marketing thing and getting kids interested in a line to make it sustainable. It's pretty amazing how dominant GI Joe was in the 80s/early 90s. |

I can't believe Hasbro never released a single carded Renegades Roadblock or a Coyote. (we finally got a Roadblock but he was bundled w' a bunch of other crap).
Also, I can't believe they didn't make enough Cobra Missile Command Centers (for a toyline that Hasbro claims doesn't have a big fan base it sure sold out quickly) Finally, I can't believe Hasbro hasn't made a 6 inch line of Joe figures (or allow anyone else to do them). |

I'll second a few others that I have seen here though: There's more, but I feel like I've unloaded enough for one night.

I agree mostly, but I would not base the number of fans on Joecon. Many Joe fans can not attend due to work, finances, or a host of other circumstances. There is definitely not enough demand to make a retail line worthwhile. And while it may not be pc to say, there will never be demand from kids to warrant a new Joe line unless there is a media tie in of epic proporions that doesn't suck. And that is a pretty big "unless." Kids are just not into GI Joe or action figures. Even the most popular figure lines have a very limited release in terms of variety and number in today's market. Toy isles dedicate very little space to action figures, and 80% of the people buying them are adult collectors. It is a generational thing. Action figures are the past.
I have tried to keep both of my sons interested in Joe, but it is really hard. There is no media support and it does not resonate with them. It resonates with most of us because it's the toys of OUR generation. I can't see JOE as a mainstream product unless it drastically changes and becomes something that appeals to its intened audience....kids. The budget for JOE is not big enough at Hasbro currently to support a KIDS line AND a collectors line. As Mark Weber said in the podcast, Hasbro is waiting for a movie to kick off the newest line of Joe toys. As the success of the movie goes...so goes the JOE line and it's importance to kids. Without some form of cartoon show to support, even a movie cannot bridge the gap between kids and JOES. We are dealing with a "for profit" company that looks at one thing...it's bottom line. If Hasbro looses 5-10K worth of aging JOE fans beacuse the line is discontinued....they still have NERF, My Little Pony and TF keep them in the black. My guess is that Hasbro is eyeing a direct to consumer approach for future JOE toys in the format we currently know. This is why they are cutting ties with Fun Pub as a way to corner that niche market for themselves. To put things in perspective: If a cities' budget were equated to Hasbro's brands, TF, Pony's and Nerf would be Roads, Water/Sewer Service and Land development. GI Joe is graffiti clean-up at best right now....right down at the bottom of the budget and easily eliminated if necessary.

I can't believe Hasbro didn't keep going with KRE-O. They were so cool, there are so many more vehicles and playsets they didn't get to, and the smaller scale made them very practical. They should have at least done a few more waves of blind bags to cover off more of the characters they missed (Grunt, Breaker, Zap, Short-Fuze, Steeler, HISS driver, Cover Girl, Grand Slam, Ripcord, Thunder, Buzzer, Dr. Venom, Wild Weasel, Monkeywrench, Sci-Fi, many more).
Those blind bags were crazy popular and always sold out instantly around here. |

No demand for action figures? Horse feathers. This Christmas alone, 1 daughter gets all the DC superhero girls, another is getting the lol girls, my niece is getting all the kiddie Avengers, and my son is getting a pile of retro Joe stuff. All of it specifically requested by them. Kids like to play. My sons friends are all interested in his(and my) old Joes and want to play with them. I would also point out TRU has carried and continues to carry True Heroes. An entire aisle worth of the stuff. Shelf space they certainty wouldn't alot to peg warmers.
Kreo was too much too late. The figures were the bomb but the initial sets were Battleship re-treads. Once they got to the legit great builds like the Hiss Tank and Wolverine it was too late. Mega bloks more "realistic" CoD line was certainly no help. I would buy the heck out of any Joe building block line, but at this point I would gladly pay for the club to just do a couple of those awesome yearbooks the Transformers Kreons got. |
