I cherish G.I. Joe, and if there isn't a single new item produced by Hasbro, I will continue to cherish G.I. Joe. I'm not mourning the line, merely expressing my frustrations with the way it's been treated by its parent company. Third party Joe substitutes are fine and all, but those are not really going to reel in the interest of younger kids, and that is what any toy line needs to survive. If there's no product on the shelves at physical stores, if there's no media on television available to watch, then they won't even realize it exists. And when ROC and Retaliation were out and had toys on the shelves, I recall several occasions where I overheard the excitement of younger kids seeing toy characters they liked on the pegs.
Like I said: I don't have an answer to fix the problem that would appease both shareholders and collectors alike. And I'm not looking for an argument about stats and economic interference or whatever. Just looking for some commiseration camaraderie. Sure, it's just a stupid toy - but it's a stupid toy I care about. I kind of miss the '80s altogether, so the nostalgia for the major toy lines I had as a kid is a natural fit. And unfortunately, it's unlikely to ever be as popular again. Unless Millennials suddenly delve into '80s culture in a big way and demand those things return in force. I agree that G.I. Joe will never be anywhere near as popular as it was in the 80s. That said I still think it has the legs to be a solid if not wildly successful IP and toy line. My suggestions as a lay fan would be as follow; Put out a top quality cartoon via Netflix or the like. The target for this should be 8-12 year olds. Bring in a few classic writers as well as some new talent with an understanding of what made the orgional work. (Selfless heroics and teamwork). Release a direct to video feature every two years or so. These should be in a separate continuity from the Netflix show and should be targeted at teens and adults. Have a quality well designed moble game produced based on the Netflix show with nods to previous iterations of the Joes (I'm thinking alternate skins). I think a triple A console game would be far too risky and less likely to hit the target audience. Done right I think these steps could support a reasonabley sized toy line for a few years.

I've been getting old Sigma Six toys off of eBay and my son loves them. Those are some of his favorite toys. He loves to get me to play and we trade weapons and accessories. Those toys are very well made and tough and I actually wish that they had kept it going alongside the 25th-anniversary stuff.

I’m okay with what we have. There are a few gaps in my collection that I plan to remedy at some point. There’s a lot of custom vehicles I want to work on. I’m good.

I'm going to offer a contrary position, one that runs against the doom and gloom perspective that seems to be pervading our hobby (and believe me, I get it). I hope I don't get tarred and feathered for it.
Here it is: We are living in the most exciting and dynamic time to be a G.I. Joe fan right now. Those years were availed by true fans to take advantage of the death of the fever by buying lots and lots of collectibles on the secondary market for prices even lower than they originally retailed. That was a prolific year for true fans, no one cared for Star Wars anymore, the future belonged to the fevers of the moment but true fans had a feast buying for less. Now 30 years later with the Star Wars fever at its peak, with even two more movies and several other spin-off movies, comics and video games in the horizon, it is the worst moment in life to buy Star Wars collectibles since they have increased their cost exponentially due to everyone (old fans, adult fans and younger fans) looking for what they missed years ago. The same mechanic works for superhero comics right now, it is the worst time of life to buy vintage superhero comics since the superhero movie genre is on its peak now and with the Justice League new movie premiere prices for vintage JLA comics are a crazyness. We are in our "dead franchise" "nobody cares for it" moment, take advantage of it, complete your collection, look for bargain deals and buy lots of junkyard pieces swap them and create that mint figure you are looking for, buy those old collectibles you always wished when you were a kid, complete your comic collection, this is the time for true fans to strengthen their collection and buy all those things they always desired. Be patient, those holy grails will not be holy grails anymore but you will find one in the boundaries of your budget. In the mid 80's a lot of people liquidated their Star Wars collections as they did not see any future for the franchise, Star Wars fans were in the same position then that we are now so do not be discouraged. As the future brings nothing to G.I. Joe, more and more people will liquidate their collections and true fans will be there to take them. Maybe G.I. Joe ARAH will be death for many but ARAH will live forever as long as we have a bunch of vintage figures and some vehicles to "fight for freedom wherever there is trouble" Yo Joe! |
