I just got "The Great Big Toys R Us Book of Awesome," pre-holiday catalog. 119 pages and no pics of Joes. 5 Nights at Freddy's is in there, but no GI Joe. This is truly a small collectors line. Enjoy it while you can!!!
Edit: sorry about the title. Stupid fat fingers and autocorrect. It's supposed to say "Not Popular Enough"

Well the last thing any of us want is to have to shove some pesky kid out of the way when we go to the store to buy our man toys.

Seriously though, seems odd TRU wouldn't feature, or at least mention, a product exclusive to them in their big holiday publication. It's almost like TRU couldn't give a fart whether or not these sell. I wonder if it was a package deal from Hasbro, "Carry this G.I. Joe shit and we'll cut ya a better wholesale deal on board games and Princess dolls!" |

It's possible that the finished product wasn't ready in time for the catalouge publication. For instance, we never saw any ChinaBay Joes for this line leak out way early. We also saw some preproduction changes, like Tombstones eye. I would imagine that it has more to do with a product line that has only five things to sell and has gone on clearance, dispite being execluive the past two years.
Seriously though, was any of the Funko Reaction stuff in there? I haven't seen it yet? I would think almost none of the "Collector's Vector" section stuff would be there. That stuf will sell regardless. My TRU has already sold out of all the Joes stuff and restocked the three packs, and half of them were gone yesterday. (I only bought a single Duke.Tombstone pack from this TRU.) As for the Five Nights at Freddy's stuff. There is a whole half shelf space for that stuff at TRU and also, it's popularity will wane. That's two good reasons to spend money on advertising in my book.

One thing that continually irks me when we have these discussions is how frequently "clearance" is mentioned. Why is it fine for [WWE/TMNT/How to Train Your Dragon/CARS 2/Toy Story/Hot Wheels] toys to peg warm literally for years at full retail price while Joe product "must be clearanced" within a year of release and is wiped out of stock? The fact that GI Joe hits clearance, in my opinion, seemingly has less to do with how well the line sells and more to do with the fact that it is now annual in nature while other lines are not necessarily so. They (retailers) tend to clear out last year's stock before this year's stock comes in because they feel they must? I don't know. The logic of when and how discounted things get clearanced at retail is perplexing to me. Maybe toys are just more stagnant across the board in my region, but I have seen crap tons of stuff that doesn't sell through this quickly, if at all, remain on the pegs year after year literally collecting dust while Joe product remains scarce and is a whipping boy for having gone to clearance. Can anyone speak to these points?
Is my experience really that divergent from the average 'Tanker's experience in the toy market, generally speaking? Are you guys having constant sell-out and replenishment of your local toy aisles on pretty much everything EXCEPT for GI Joe? Or are you noticing stagnation on plenty of other products that just don't get put on clearance by the retailers? Or are Joes routinely sold out in your area? Or what?

They could have used the press photos Hasbro released months ago, so that's not why it wasn't included. Cost wouldn't be much of a factor either, as TRU is mailing out this toy circular regardless. It wouldn't have cost them an additional relative dime to devote a corner of one page to G.I. Joe. Mostly, I suspect, it simply has to do with TRU either not being a very well-run company or it was a pay-to-play advert where the manufacturers actually pay to have their products featured.
Advertising at this point for any collector-type toy would eb to expand the market. It don't think there's much market to expand to without a movie or TV show or anything though.

What I'm sayong is that they aren't concerned abotu it selling. They think the sells will be fine. GI Joe has been selling for years, people see the brand and know it and if they see it at TRU they might even buy it if they aren't collectors.

Once the collectors get their fill, interest apparently dries up. Part of that is the fault of the case assortments (for instance, seems like Hasbro kept producing last year in order to get Gung Ho out there, but that also meant stores were stuck with excess Shipwreck/CC 2-packs and etc.) and part if it was also due to just poor product selection (apparently a lot of the product just wasn't desirable enough). The fact TRU specifically turned down vehicles this year says volumes about how dissatisfied they were/are with the sales. |
