Hello,
I have been an avid collector for years, stopped as a kid back in early 90 once the line got too crazy for me. I think the last batch I liked were the Sky Patrol remolds of certain vehicles and loved Tiger Force very much. Went and grew up and moved on from Joe's like many others. Anyway, this Christmas while looking for stuff for my oldest, I saw the new line of Joes and became infatuated with them once more. He is getting the 50th TRU sets for this 6th birthday and we have sat down and watched all of the Sunbow episodes and genuinely likes them. His gateway drug was Transformers so this to me was a natural progression. Of course with him, and looking back into the old figs I have, I really like the new designs but I have discovered the 25th-30th anniversary sets and love the remade older line just a bit more. The molds are vastly superior to my ancients 83-86 figs. What am I getting myself into here? There are some crazy costs to figures in this nowadays. Sometimes eclipsing classic fig prices. I already found the M.A.S.S device sets and my old vehicles are in need of TLC. Getting back into collecting as something to also do with my son. I am not looking for in the packaging figs. Its part of the Andy from Toy Story in me. What are some easy pit falls to the new figures and vehicles before I get too deep into this? - Max |

Make sure your wife and budget is OK with starting a new collection. Getting those aspects straight right away will make your collecting a lot more fun!!!

This is honestly how a lot of us here started on our current path, its a well worn path and at this point many of the desired ( and formerly Rare) figures are reissued in some capacity so you can put toether a cast of characters pretty easily. Just take your time, learn slowly, priorities who character wise and what vehicle and playset wise is most important to you and it can be great fun. Most of us general try to do an ultimate ( For each person this is different) version of the OG-13 ( 1982) characters, then we build the roster of each year up to the point that we outgrew or just dropped off as kids. For me that year is 87 or 88 but I had a younger brother who kept collecting/ playing so I do have some familiarity up till about 90 or 91. It cannot be overstated how much this community has been invaluable in me getting the set up I currently have, they will help you in any way that is reasonable if you just behave remotely decent. At some point the holes in the modern collection will likely necessitate some ( sometimes minor sometimes not) customizing. Again this community will tell you the best recipes and parts lists to get what you are after, a lot of inspiration can be gained from looking at their work. Finally I was just where you are a couple of years ago and the journey has resulted in a few cherished items that I have duplicates of, so once you put together your want list ( we pretty much all have a wants/ haves and a Buy/ sell/ trade BST list) send it to me, whoever here you click with in a PM and I will try and hook you up with what I can, pass it forward and all that!

Pretty much what War said.
I just started again last year after walking away from Joe in '87. I highly recommend YoJoe.com Snake Eyes (v54) G.I. Joe Action Figure - YoJoe Archive so you can see all the different versions of a particular character you are considering buying. Put a little research into it before you buy and you'll save money in the long run. |

Welcome to the 'Tank! I have to agree with 46 Zone in that you should have a budget and "approval" before starting a collection. I have a much smaller collection than others, mostly because of budget. I recommend narrowing your focus at the start to a certain group of figures and then branching out from there.
Ebay and other BST listings are good look at. And smalljoes.com carries a good amount of modern era figures if you don't want to bother with auction sites. If you're only buying loose items, you'll avoid the higher costs associated with packaged figures and vehicles. I have two sons, a 3 1/2 year old and a 3 month old. I plan on letting both of my kids play with these toys when they're old enough, so I don't keep anything on card. There's lots of information on this site and in the forums, so just check back often!

Running would be a good idea, but since you're here you probably aren't going to do that...
I'll start by sinking your hopes a bit. We just heard from a convention Q&A that Hasbro won't be releasing anything at retail in 2016. So if you like anything you see at Toys R Us this year, buy it while you can. It won't be there next year, and neither will anything else for Joes. With that unpleasantness out of the way, I will tell you that I am basically like you. I was away from Joes since I grew up with them. I also abandoned them in the very early 90's when they went into toxic avengers territory and I didn't get back around to them until around 2012 or so (when my oldest was, let's guess about 3) and I started trying to plan out some Christmases in advance. Since then, I have probably put a couple of thousand dollars into Joe toys. It goes sickeningly fast. I can say, the only pitfalls I have put myself into - that I know of - are buying inferior versions of a figure only to find out later that a better one exists at about the same price point, and paying too much for something at one place because I didn't see it anywhere else. Basically, to avoid the first pitfall you can head over to the YoJoe archive to see what versions exist for any figure you want to get. You can check out generalsjoes for decent reviews, just remember that the reviews there are usually more collector-oriented than play-oriented. Weigh the criticisms and praises with that in mind. Also, I spent a LOT of money on eBay before ever even really looking at the BST threads here on the 'Tank. Finding out about the BST on this website, for example, let me find a few Retaliation Ultimate Duke figures for right around $10/each where they go for twice that (or more) on eBay. There are other 1:18 toy sites with BST sections as well, so look around. I wasted a lot of money relying on eBay because I thought it was my only real option. Sometimes you can get a fair deal on eBay (particularly if you buy a small lot of figures) but more often than not you're going to pay more than you have to if you go through eBay. Don't get me wrong, there are some here who post prices in their BST that would make eBay sellers blush, but you can usually find reasonable prices on a lot of things from other members here. Just do your homework first. Last but not least, if you are not a Joe purist, you can find a lot of cheaper (cheaper in price, but also often in quality as well so weigh your options) vehicles from other lines that will work well enough with Joes. If you have a Big Lots near you, check around early November for their annual restock of Power Team Elite World Peacekeepers 1:18 vehicles. They are realistic 1:18 stuff at a reasonable price. I will caution you though, that the Humvees' doors are fragile and prone to breakage in children's hands. But aside from that, my kids haven't broken anything else on the Humvees, the dune buggies, or the ATVs they have received so far. The plastic does feel weak, but only the doors have fallen victim so far. We'll have to see how they do with the World Peacekeepers helicopters next year... There is also a command post set made for World Peacekeepers which retails for about $40 if you can find it in stock at your local Big Lots. Third party prices tend to reach closer to $100 and it's NOT worth that much. But for $40 it's pretty good. My kids have so far (after 1 year and change) only broken off one of the front doors from the command post set. Toys R Us carries a True Heroes line of vehicles with some slightly more durable plastic. Several times each year they typically run a buy one, get one 40% off sale on True Heroes, so keep an eye out for that if you are interested in the line. This year's newest offerings have been ultra flimsy CRAP, so pay attention to what you are buying. I have two of their Navy Seal boats and one of their black hawk helicopters, and all are likely to survive playtime with the kids for at least a few years. There is also Elite Force. I was able to find them at Meijer until recently, but now I can only find them at TRU. Wherever you find them, they have a pretty nice M1A2 tank (currently on sale for $30 with free shipping from the TRU website, which is a REALLY good deal): Elite Force M1A2 Battle Tank - Blue Box, Inc. - Toys "R" Us The treads are free-rolling and rubber. The hatches on the turret both open, and there is an ammo storage bay and a cargo rack on the turret. The turret splits in half to reveal an interior area to play with figures inside the tank - really a cool little play set with a firing main cannon (fires a small plastic missile, not a big foam dart or anything like True Heroes is pushing now) and it has two small buttons that make some attack sounds. I have two of these waiting for my kids to get next year. They will be very, very pleased. You can see what I'm setting up for them below (figures are NOT included in this set, so be prepared to supply your own):

Yep, I was in this place about three years ago. I am going to say this quietly so not too many people hear me, but I like the ME stuff much better than ARAH. If I were to give advice, I would say take your time, particularly with Ebay. You could probably today, go out there and find everything you want. But, I would say don't rush, wait for the "right" prices.
Too bad you want loose, I have a bunch of 25th figures in the package that I want to sell, for exactly the reason you say. I want to be able to "play" with them, not look at them in a package. Also, I am more a customizer than a collector so I hate to open a package with an older figure (25th are starting to get older now) for some parts. |

Oh, hey, listen to Zap's advice above. he is a stellar individual, I would listen to his advice on all matters. His post reminded me of something, check out Marauder's Gun Runners and their figures. Not GI Joe, but really high quality 1:18ish generic military figures that can be modern military or sci fi. They have the most awesome accessories available for their figures (and Joe figures), with super realistic (for the scale) firearms, deuce gear, and other items.

That's what the draw is. If the figures still looked like they did back in the day, I would've never came back. There's only about 10-15 ME figures that are complete garbage to me. ME Monkeywrench and Slipstream are at the top of that list. |
