Recently, I started to really look at the complexity (ore lack thereof) of ME figures starting with the 25th Anniversary line. I also looked at the overall quality of the figures to include overall paint applications, detail within the paint app, molding detail and overall symmetry of the figure itself. After comparing some of the better figures of each of the modern era lines (25th, ROC, POC, 30th and Retaliation) I wanted to see where the Retaliation line fell out amongst it's predecessors. Here is what I cam up with and where I think retaliation as a whole ranks agains the other ME lines:
The following are a list of figures from each line that I used as a basis to make my decision. Keep in mind that these are my opinions and terms like "rarity" or "complexity" are simply my opinion alone. I graded each figure on a 0-100 scale and only briefly covered the figure's attributes so as not to sound like a review. I then gave an overall score for the line on the same 0-100 scale based on all of the figures median average when compared together. 25th: 70/100 1) B.A.T.S: While an accurate adaptation of its ARAH likeness, this version of the B.A.T.S. felt rushed and sloppy. Head proportion was off, articulation was good but certain poses caused unwanted removal of hands. Paint app seemed rushed with bleed over of yellow and silver onto the black surfaces. Body mold seemed elementary. 75/100 2) Spirit (Iron Knife Charlie): My issues with this figure are plentiful and I picked him because he was one of the harder figured from me to obtain. His likeness to his ARAh counterpart was so-so, and they went so worn on so many levels. The face seemed cartoonish and the the skin tone was a weird glossy tan which looked odd. He looked like a pissed off caveman. 60/100 3) Alpine; Probable one of the better figures of this series and definitely one of the hardest to obtain. His articulation is good, and his paint apps are nearly spot on with his ARAH counterpart. Some effort went in to designing this guy. 80/100 ROC LINE: This was the first movie line and felt very much like a movie line of figures. Although there was a flood of both vehicles and figures for this line, it did not fair well at retail and left a lot to be desired. 75/100 1) Agent Helix: A newly introduced female to the Joe line, she was a bit hard to obtain due to here originality. Much like the 25th Scarlett and Resolute Baroness, Helix was built on a very dainty frame. Here paint apps were good, her detail was excellent and her overall appearance made here a great figure to own. Too bad she's one of the few from this line. 80/100 2) Paris Pursuit Snake Eyes: I guess it's hard to go wrong with a Snake Eyes Figure, and this was a pretty good modern version. The long hooded jacket was a nice touch but did take away from his overall articulation. Not a lot of detail on the torso and the legs and the proportion of legs and torso were a bit off. Paint app was black so hard to mess up. 70/100 3) Cobra Snow Serpent: Probably the best figure of the line IMO and the most accurate depiction of its ARAH counterpart. The trouser ballooned out a little too much on his lower legs, and the Grey/Dark Grey Camouflage kept in step with the running ROC paint schemes. 75/100 PURSUIT OF COBRA: IMO probably the best an most unexpected ME lines. 92/100 1) Shock Trooper: Great mold, great articulation and an overall awesome figure. They finally figured out the hands and feet with this guy and included the perfect compliment of weapons and accessories, doing away with the lame rocket launchers. His paint applications were basic and probably the only real flaw to this figure. 90/100 2) Money Bags Destro: Probably the hardest figure for me to obtain in all of the ME lines. Great paint application, and a preview of what would be the body of the 30th Iron Grenadier. Great overall figure, no so much on articulation, and an awesome assortment of accessories. 85/100 3) Low Light: To me, best ME figure to date. FOr some very hard to find, for others, quite plentiful and easy to obtain. His likeness to his ARAH predecessor was spot on and the accessories and weapons were the best I've seen to date. 95/100 30th Anniversary/Renegades: Again, another surprise, and a great 30th representation for Gi Joe. 89/100 1) Renegades Storm Shadow: I bought this figure expecting rainbows and Unicorns to come flying out of his package when I opened him and I was a little disappointed after all of the hype. Very basic paint apps, great articulation at waits and feet and the hands were definitely designed for his plethora of weapons. Based on how much hoopla was made about this guy, I expected more I guess. 80/100 2) Law and Order: Another tough figure to acquire, mainly based on the poor distribution in my area. A bit of a cartoonish off shoot of the ARAH law and Order but not so much as to make him a bad figure. Based off the Renegades cartoon character, he had a great overall pain app, great articulation and just enough accessories and weapons not be overkill. 90/100 3) Lifeline: A much needed update to one of the better ARAH figures made. He was a spot on modern update of his ARAH likeness and had great accessories, making him a must have from this set. Overall great articulation and great paint apps! He was hands down my favorite of this line: 92/100 Retaliation Movie Line: When Wv 1 hit, I didn't think I would buy anything but the red ninjas and troopers. Later waves got me hooked. Overall score would have been higher if it was based on waves 3.5 and 4, but overall 86/100 1) Ultimate Cobra Commander: I take a look at all of the modern CC's and this wan leaves them all in the dust. His paint apps, uniform..heck everything about him was spot on for the 82/83 CC. His two head option make him very versatile and he is now the center point of my ME cobra army. 95/100 2) Ultimate Firefly/3 Pack Firefly: I chose to put both of these figures under one heading because each had strengths and weakness. the 3 pack version has to be the best representation of ARAH FF we have had to date, however the color and articulation, attention to detail and movie accuracy of Ultimate FF make him a pretty nice figure as well. Together I will give them 90/100 3) Ultimate Storm Shadow: After the hype associated with the renegades SS, I was hesitant to rush out and get this guy. Boy am I glad that I did. Probably the best modern SS yet and a greg representation as the modern likeness of the 84 SS. He has great ninja articulation, a second head and all of the weapons Renegades stormy had. Great figure. 92/100 So, if you read this far and didn't scoff at everything I had to say, here is how I break out Retaliation amongst ME figures: 1) POC 2) 30th/Renegades 3) RETALIATION 4) ROC 5) 25th Feel free to share your thoughts on where you feel Retaliation belongs among the ME lines.

That's a tuffy. Idk how anyone can rate a 100 point score on these figures. POC's big flaw was they recycled a lot of 25th figure parts as drivers, and most of the first wave? was recycled roc parts,25th parts, and not all that good IMO. Agreed the shock trooper is awesome, and to me the best mold to date.
Retaliation the most first wave, and the 5 POA drivers where terrible, but had some redeeming qualities..nice sculpts, stuff like that. Retaliation is my favorite, because that's where I came in. That coupled with 2 shock trooper repaints. The only bad thing I can really say about retaliation is those aweful rocker ankles on a lot of the figures that would've been ridiculously awesome without them, especially ultimate duke, and ultimate CC. Previous lines I can't comment on without assuming. I've owned a few figures from roc&25th,but not enough to claim any real level of knowledge about them.,the ones I did get I was very unimpressed. Probably because I was already exposed to retaliation,POC,and 30th. Last edited by Contraband; 05-19-2014 at 02:52 PM.. |

I take issue with some of your justifications for the rankings on individual figures, but that's not the point of the thread, so:
1 PoC/30th ( I consider these more or less one line) 2 Retaliation 3 RoC 4 25th |

The 25th should be way higher as if it were not for this version of the toyline being a hit, we would have never recieved any of the other stuff that followed. Plus, it is the sole line dedicated to true representations of the o-ring toyline.
My ranking would be: 1. 25th 2. PoC/30th 3. Retaliation 4. Renegades 5. RoC

Not for me. I was in the toy isles in '08 purchasing my little pet shop for my daughters almost daily. Not one time did any of the 25th line catch my eye!! First time I noticed a figure and thought "these things are awesome!" Was the driver in the crimson hiss, and steel brigade delta in the vamp looking at me through the window. I pointed them out to the wife, and said "those are bad ass",but she was prego so,I didn't push my luck. My son's birth&fascination with marvel figures finally allowed me to sneak joes in,and I instantly went in hunt for that green guy staring at me earlier years before. |

I agree 100%. Even with the combining of 30th and Renegades. They are 1 line in my opinion.

1. POC (Best line of figures ever)
2. 30th/Ren. (Ren SS, and Lifeline have the best accessories ever) 3. Ret. (Ultimate line as well as multiple troop builders available at 5B are the gem of this line) 4. Resolute (Resolute RB is the only reason why this is ahead of 25th) 5. 25th (Lets face it, this line got most of us back in the Joe game. I love the 25th line, but the updates in lines above all trump this line) 6. ROC (The only good part of this line, is that it inspired Hasbro to up the game and make POC)
