Good question. :-) Never underestimate the allure and magical pixy dust like quality of nostalgia.
As said above, Shipwreck obtained 'kewl' status after his appearance on the cartoon. His salty seaman-like demeanor and general nonchalance endeared him to many a prepubescent fan. Quick-kick I feel represented great potential, even though many (myself not least of all) probably considered him simply a Karate Kid knock-off- a popular movie at the time, if memory serves. These characters represent standing archetypes painted in broad strokes. However, sometimes these archetypes exist best when played to the hilt, as these two were. I mean c'mon, a shirtless martial artist with no firearms, on a battlefield!? Wouldn't last long enough to throw his first round house kick! Shipwreck would certainly last longer, but he's no less an egregious attempt at a salty sea dog stereotype. In the end it comes down to the fact that both characters were inserted into the GI Joe historical canon, and therefore in our hearts they will remain forever more. |

As a kid I loved both Shipwreck and Quick Kick and there figures were heavily used. Now to be honest with you I don't like either one. However I already bought Shippy and will buy at least one Quick Kick.

I never understood Quick Kick's appeal either. He never really stood out to me in the cartoon and was just another character with a quirk.
But I like Shipwreck because he was ridiculous, funny, yet kicked ass if you crossed him. And since I followed the cartoon more than the comics his character was better fleshed-out. Also who can not like Shipwreck when he broke into the museum to wear a pirate suit?

I agree with the thread-starter. These are ok characters, but I also really do not understand their seemingly undeserved adoration by some fans. I tended as a kid to like the characters with good figures, ones you could see going into a battle. I tended to dislike the bizarro characters, at least on the Joe side. Cobra could have all the strange characters they wanted, because that was part of Cobra's schitck.
Shipwreck stuck out like a sore thumb anywhere but on a WHALE or the FLAGG. He was somewhat of a smartass on the cartoon, and I didn't find him as amusing as some. Quick-kick was much better on the cartoon than Shippy, clearly some writers had affection for QK. He was an interesting character, but as a toy, when was the last time you saw shirtless/barefoot U.S. soldiers running into battle? What's worse is that in the cartoon he was often depicted in the snow missions. WTF. Honestly, I don't remember QK doing anything noteworthy in the comic except getting sent to the gulag in the Marvel 60's, and then getting killed in 109. Did he have any other significant roles in the comic? These are ok characters, but they seem to get more love from fans than I think they deserve, IMO. |

Shipwreck was one of my favorites as a kid, very likely because of the cartoon portrayal, and because I loved pirates as much, if not more, than ninjas...and Shipwreck had a parrot, a pirate-looking gun, and a weird hook thing? In my mind he was clearly a GI Joe "pirate." I always played heavily with the 'nautical' GI Joe and Cobras.
Later in life, I really enjoyed him in his DDP portrayal, and I'd love to see a 25th Anniversary Style version of that Shipwreck. Quick Kick, well...he was a ninja. The 1980s were big on Ninjas, as many others have already pointed out.

As for Quick Kick, I think it was because he was the unlikely GI Joe. Everyone was all military-based and at the time, he was just different. But by saying that, if I knew characters like Quick Kick would lead to really crazy characters and the Street Fighter line, I wouldn't dig it as much. Also, bare in mind that during the year of Quick Kick, those of us who were kids/teens of the 80's were inundated with Kung-Fu/Super Ninja programming on television and during that time, I know a lot of my friends and school were watching these shows, Sho Kosugi "Return of the Ninja" movies and buying Ninja magazine, ninja stars and ninja outfits. But again, that was how things were as a kid growing up in the 80's. So, that's my opinion. As for Quick Kick, I also agree with the ninja movies. We didn't have The Wiggles back then, we had Sho Kosugi getting his head lopped off by Cole after being defeated in a ninja to ninja battle. On a side note, Sho Kosugi is coming out with another follow up to that ninja series this year. Should be a great flick, as long as it's in the same B class of movies as the rest of them were. |

Quick Kick is not a ninja. He's just a guy who knows karate. If he was a ninja he'd be smart enough to know that you should at least wear a shirt and some sort of footwear when going into battle. |

I always thought quick kick was a bit silly but he appealed to the kids of the day.
As for Shipwreck it was by far his appearances in the cartoon that made him one of my favorites. Take lights Camera Cobra for example.. Shippy gets into a bar fight and then gets arrested. We were watching some episodes the other day and Shippy was the "adult character". His hitting on Women and (not seen) getting drunk and such makes him amusing. He's a favorite in my household, even my Dad liked him back in the day when we would watch the cartoon. |

I was never a big fan of either character either. I have a feeling that they were given the kind of attention they were on the cartoon was for that very reason. If you have a character that is generally lame, redundant or useless, how do you get kids to buy it? You make them a featured character on the daily cartoon show.
I'm pretty sure I owned these two back in the day, most likely for that very reason. But, Hasbro has made my decision on whether to pick up Shippy again very easy by making him even more lame and giving him a sorry paint job this time around. I will likely pass on QK this time too, unless they come up with a uniform for that poor guy. Last edited by thunderdan19; 01-15-2008 at 01:36 PM.. |
