I've been reading a lot about then12" figures, what with this being then50th anniversary and all. The original 12" figures were very innovative with their articulation. I'm sure those who had the original figures thought it couldn't get any better. But now we have sideshow and hot toys, and they seem to be more advanced in articulation and sculpting.
The same can be said for the smaller figures. Star Wars came on the scene, and people marveled. But then ARAH came about. They had legs that bent at the knees and arms that bent a the elbows! Nothing could be better! But wait -- the 25th anniversary of ARAH brought about even more advanced figures. The articulation and sculpting was beyond even the best ARAH figures. And the articulation progressed through the modern era/PoC/30th lines. The wrists that rotate as well as flex and extend are a nice touch. Some StarWars figures have an extra neck joint that allows the head to be extended further. I'd like to have seen that with some Joes, especially Lowlight, so he could be posed in the prone position. And we've seen the figure sample from BFS. Amazing! Idk if there are any advancements or new technology with their figure, but it looks like a highly articulated 1/6 figure in 1/18 form to me. But we've gone backwards as well. Several lines are producing 5 poa figures, and even some of our beloved Joes saw 5 poa releases in the retaliation line, as we are all painfully aware. With all the discussion of the fate of GI Joe as we know it, and the fate of toys and action figures in general, I ask --- have we reached the pinnacle of the action figure, or are there further advancements that we could hope to see? I'm assuming that I'm not outside the norm in that I've always wanted as realistic as possible. And with some if the modern articulation, we can pose these things to look as lifelike as possible. But is this it?

For evolution in action figure lines, I think they will keep evolving, but in different ways depending on what they come from: there will be the 3d printed figures, small company toy lines but there will be retail lines.
For 3d printers, when the prices drop more and with the ability to make things in more colors, you can make your own figure with the mount of articulation you want. You can have a figure with 50 points of articulation in 4 or 6 inches, but will be fragile, or expensive or both, something that should be easier to do with 3d printers. For the Retail figure lines, I think there will be more and more brands with a 5 poa cheap figure for kids and more expensive more articulated figure for adult collectors With all that, the small producing scale kistarter figures, like the ones from 4 horseman (kickstarted ravens and their own Power Lords and Outer Space lines), as well the soon to be kickstarted Boss Fight Spartan line. Oritoy Heavy rain and Lost planet figures, are made in smaller scale, with not more expensive prices, but focusing on quality and looks/design of figures and vehicles.

Honestly, the only extra articulation point you could put into a fig like Ultimate SE would be swivel thighs and a neck joint so I think the next generation of figs won't necessarily be defined by more articulation.
Toy companies have to make a profit first and foremost. If they can do that with 5 poa figs then that will be the path they take. I wonder if the future of signature brands like SW and Joe is going to be a cheaper, small scale, low poa fig for kids and a more expensive, larger scale, more poa fig for adults. For example, Joe movie figs for $5 with 5 poa in 3 3/4 scale and collector figs for $20 - $30 with lots of articulation in 6 inch scale. The collector figs would have much smaller waves and more time between waves. Essentially it would mean the end of quality 3 3/4 Joes. Perhaps, Hasbro could target both groups this way. Who knows. In the end there may be max profit in 5 poa figs. |

I think last year when Hot Toys dabbled in the 1:12 scale with The Bat and The Batman which came with it, we saw our first glimpse of how the toy market will go. I think companies who do the larger format toys will downscale to the 6" market and that's where the real battle for shelf-space will take place when you have a Sideshow or Hot Toys figure sat next to a Mattel or Hasbro in the same scale, on the same shelf. I think there's a fair chance the Star Wars Black Series has paved atleast part of the way for a 6" GI Joe line and, if I'm right, we could be in for some very awesome toys. As for the 3.75"-4" scale, I think a lot more companies are adopting that scale too and whilst I think there are physical limitations to what can be done due to the size itself, some of you mention articulation used in other lines which might cross over, but ultimately there will be a plateau where just no more can be done in that regard. However, I think we'll see an influx of scale-compatible lines all vying for the same market-space. Some will be a pile of 5 POA crap but some will be top-end. Exciting times ahead, methinks.
