2013 was a good year for me regarding joes in particular. ive started customizing my dream figures (opening torsos, painting, lazy bastard customs and part swaps).
Joe Swat Team New LRRP Team Budo Jr. Rampart Joe Seal Team codename Raven Wings (based on the concept case from Hasbro) i have 10 WIP and 3 more in plan to complete my favorite ARAH figures in ME format, but during the middle of the year a funny thing happened. I met some amazing folks here at hisstank whose passion for photography and dio stories exceeds mine (Shadowwarrior and Monte Williams to say a few) and their focus is a little corner of the joe universe named adventure team. While im not fully versed in G.I. Joe Lore (what i know about joes is just limited to Marvel and DDP comics run as well as figures i own), im fully interested in the concept of Joe Colton team prior to the militaristic Joes we know today. With this in mind i usually start knowing the background and story of the characters before starting to customize them (i tried going from the character name going backwards and i usually end up making an adventure team custom too militaristic or "out of character" so to speak. The new LRRP team is a good example of my trial of making a adventure team that went in a different direction), again with my limited knowledge in joe folklore i imagined the Adventure team as a sort of precursor of the current joe incarnation (IMO gijoe is a anti terrorist sub-branch of the US Military currently expanded to operate globally much like a special UN supergroup). Adventure Team for me is a 70s military sub-branch born during the cold war to investigate, explore and verify items considered as "viable threats" to US security and its way of life. They are tasked to determine any and all reports (be it terror threats, paranormal, supernatural or just plain weird), assess it and provide answers (if not solution) if it is deemed critical. Its a cross between X-Files and Indiana Jones so they are a menagerie of professional field (cryptozoology, archeology, botanist, zoologist, forensic, historians, investigators) given military training and access to any and all sensitive files (including NSA, CIA, FBI, Military) before morphing into an elite fighting force (because of their diversed background and a plethora of skills set and knowledge to choose from). That's my take on them, my question to you guys is: a.) what is the official hasbro background story regarding the adventure team (if you could provide me links to it i would greatly appreciate it) b.) what is the adventure team to you and their role in your Joe verse. that way i could choose what parts i would buy for fodder to build them. |

I use them as a group of men who like to do adventuresome stuff, be it treasure hunting, spelunking, punching yetis in the face, carousing with easy women or engaging in fisticuffs with the locals.
It's kind of a mélange of Indiana Jones, Roadhouse, Magnum P.I. and Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man, with some The A-Team and Miami Vice thrown in for color. Like my Joeverse they're based in the '70s-'80s. While founded by former Joes, military service isn't a universal trait amongst members, but there are a number of combat veterans, and a couple of "old" timers that saw service in WWII and Korea. b) Not much of an answer, but....
I picked up the AT 3 3/4 sets this year after seeing Retaliation....Bruce Willis' "friends" seemed like an obvious homage. Since, then, I really don't know what to do with them and have not removed them from their boxes. The AT angle is totally 70s, totally campy and fun. I really like the comic. But, hard to display them with the more modern and military looking 25th, PoC, RoC, 30th figures. And, hard to create a mythos around them that places them in modern day scenarios, since they are stuck in a time warp from an apperance perspective. Plus, I liked the campiness of the comic and really don't want them to change. They're safe...nobody gets hurts, its like watching old episodes of the A-Team or Scobby Doo. So, I don't know what to do with them. I just don't think you can give them a military role.....that's part of their fun....they are just good guy adventurers that don't deal with bureacracy. |

AT doesn't really fit into the ARAH-verse (as it is) IMO.
Things like the giant spider, sasquatch, don't fit with the reality/sci-fi feel of ARAH Joe. So for me, for Colton's past, those aspects of AT are removed and they are just a group of spies/adventurers formed by Colton during the Cold War. I do retcon AT as it stands (with all it's aspects) and ARAH by changing up the concepts as needed. Cobra-La is a good AT concept.

Cool stuff. I think the AT concept fits in great with the Sunbow cartoon GI Joe universe (The crazy monster in Destro's family basement, monkey-men screaming "Orto!" Giant tube worms, etc...). The Marvel comic is my #1 canon, but for those of us who grew up in the 80's, you have to throw in some of the crazy cartoon stuff. And cartoon Shipwreck is the greatest Joe ever.

No real back story, like the military Joes, the Adventure Team was to be anyone you wanted. They gave a plain basic outline to the toy set (Capture the Pygmy Gorilla, Sneak onto Spy Island and get the stolen Top Secret Documents, ect).
The Club Adventure Team comic that is in the monthly mag is tying the AT int RAH myths. We have seen a young Baroness and her parents and now have seen a younger, two eyed Sebastion Bludd and his cousin Muldoon. The Club ran a series of Bios for several members, explaining their backgrounds and such. It's a good jumping off point.
